<DIV align=left><FONT face="Times New Roman"> The Norfolk and
Western Railroad [<EM>sic</EM>] has recently put into service two telephone
circuits for handling its trains, one between Roanoke, Va., and Bluefield, 102
miles, the other between Bluefield and Williamson, 107 miles. There are 16
stations on the former and 22 stations on the latter. The Western Electric
Company's telephone equipment and Gill selectors are used on both
circuits.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV align=left><FONT face="Times New Roman"> This equipment
extends through some very mountainous country and affords a good test of
telephone train dispatching under very severe conditions. This equipment
has been in service since September 25th, and Mr. W. C. Walstrom, superintendent
of telegraph, reports that both circuits have been giving excellent service
since that time. A feature of interest in connection with one of these
circuits is that the telephone was pressed into service before being fairly
completed owing to the telegraph circuits having gone out of commission due to
the recent widespread electrical disturbance attributed to the Aurora Borealis,
or Northern Lights.</FONT></DIV>
