Mark Peele Catonsville, MD From the latest Rapido telegraph: =================== Possible N Scale Paint Scheme Cancellations It seems that Rapido Trains Inc. is not immune to the economic downturn. We announced a second run of N scale passenger cars, including our new Dayniter leg-rest coach, and sufficient orders just didn't come in. Unfortunately, we can't produce a given paint scheme unless we have enough advance orders to cover our costs. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the following paint schemes are at risk of being cancelled. Illinois Central seems to be the hardest hit. The orders for cars in IC colors are less than half the quantity of our next lowest paint scheme. You can see all of the second run N scale product numbers in one glance by clicking here. * Central of Georgia * Chesapeake & Ohio * Erie * Grand Trunk Western * Illinois Central * Lackawanna * Louisville & Nashville * Milwaukee Road (UP Colors) * Missouri Pacific (Jenks Blue) * Norfolk & Western We'll delay production for about six weeks and see what kind of orders come in. I will let you know which paint schemes will have to be cancelled in issue 22 of the Telegraph. Hopefully the orders pick up before then and all of the paint schemes can be produced. ================================ N&W in N scale --- On Tue, 8/18/09, NW Modeling List wrote: > From: NW Modeling List > Subject: Re: Early N & W diesels in HO DCC > To: "NW Modeling List" > Date: Tuesday, August 18, 2009, 3:35 PM > > > > Regarding getting a passable "passenger" > GP9, You could use a Walthers (Proto) GP9 with the chassis > from one of their GP20 units which has a large tank and > horizontal air tanks which at least resemble the underbody > of the N&W passenger geeps. The aspects for each individual signal head are different depending on what aspects are necessary to be displayed at a specific location. An N&W operating rule book will show what aspects are used by the railroad for a give range of years. Rules and aspects change over time. In very simple terms, a seven position color-position- light would have two green lights top and bottom, three red lights in a horizontal row though the center, and yellow lights on the diagonal positions on the perimeter. For instance the aspect of three vertical yellow lights or two vertical green lights means 'proceed'; three horizontal yellow lights or three horizontal red lights means stop or stop-and-stay. Other aspects display, approach, approach slow, approach medium, diverging approach and many other aspects. The intent is to provide the engineer with speed control information and then some information on diverging routes. Thus, signals are constructed to show different aspects as a train approaches a switch, cross over, siding, interlocking or whatever. They are not just -stop-or-go. So, not all signal heads use all 7 locations. There are a couple of websites that cover railroad signaling especially the Pennsylvania railroad type which are similar but not the same as N&W types. You would do well to study these sites and also visit any railroad layouts that use extensive operating signal systems. They will have some good advice for you.
