style="FONT-SIZE: 12px">“Mollie” #475 is at Strasburg. Its whistle is
similar to the K27 whistle by Soundtraxx, a single chime with a higher pitch
than the standard A or Y whistle. I have not been able to find any
videos or recordings with E’s, unstreamlined K’s or S’s to compare to this
TSU-1000 for example. The triad whistles on J’s and streamlined
K’s (and possibly other roads such as SP) were new in the 1930’s/1940’s and
would probably not have been on older engines built in the teens and twenties.
To answer the question about the Shenandoah Division, I heard first hand
a streamlined K in Hagerstown with the triad whistle – that was one of the
things that hooked me on N&W; so you can definitely use the J whistle for
your K’s.

Bob Folsom

On 3/15/09 11:59 AM, "NW Modeling List"

whistle?

N&W passenger whistles on steam
locomotives consisted of three tones, the lowest normally sounding
around 230 cps. The other two created what musically is
referred to as a “major triad”. The tuning of all three notes
could vary due to changes in the pressure of the steam passing
through the whistle. Coincidentally, the SP G4s used the same
whistle. Soundtraxx offers this whistle (as a G4) in their
“large steam” Tsunami decoder. They also offer the Frisco 1522
which is a major triad. BWL has 611’s whistle programmed into
their N&W class J decoder, but the tone is very raspy compared
to the real thing, and I don’t know if you can buy the sound decoder
separately. I recommend the Tsunami – or if you need a little
more current capacity, use Soundtraxx’s DSX sound-only decoder and
put some 1.5 amp power decoder in parallel to run the
motor.

Bob Folsom

On 3/8/09 11:06 AM, "NW Modeling
