This is the main idea of the "World Swim of Malaria" project, which was presented in Montreal (CAN) with the occasion of the 11th FINA World Championships. Counting with the active support of FINA and Speedo, Official FINA Partner, this initiative will raise funds to help in the eradication of malaria worldwide, a disease that kills more that three million children every year. Up to now, this organization has gathered 250,000 swimmers, but is now actively engaged in getting new one-day competitors next December 3. "Fundamentally, we want people to swim. If, with this effort, they can collect some funds to prevent more children's deaths, it's fantastic. If you have NOT received the July/August of USMS Swimmer yet, would email me at mailto:usmsswimmer@pacificmasters.org Have a good week michael OFF THE WALL - Swimming Tahoe the long way I am writing to you as a friend of Ken Harmon, a 45-year old Danville, Ca. man who is planning to swim the 22-mile length of Lake Tahoe from Camp Richardson to the Hyatt Beach in Incline Village, NV without a wetsuit on Monday August 22, 2005 starting at 6am. He is doing this as a fundraiser for a new Danville Aquatic Center. He is hoping to raise $100,000 in pledges. This feat has only been accomplished 4 times in history and the last man to accomplish this was a 30-year old Fred Rogers, from Marin, in 1955, who swam from Kings Beach to Bijou in 19 hours and 6 minutes. Erline Christopherson of Lodi, was the fastest woman to accomplish this the feat in 1962 when she swam from Baldwin Beach to Dollar Point in 13 hours 17 minutes. Ken Harmon will attempt to accomplish this as the oldest and fastest person to ever swim the length of Lake Tahoe. Ken has been successful in many other marathon swims including the Trans Tahoe Swim which he has done without a wetsuit, individually, in 1999, 2000, 2003, in 4 hours 57 minutes, 4 hours 32 minutes, and 4 hours 21 minutes respectively. His longest swim was in 1996 when he swam the 20-mile length of Lake Washington in 10 hours and 10 minutes for charity. Ken will be in the Truckee area on Aug. 6, 2005 as he is swimming the length of Donner Lake at 8:30 am and finishing on the West shore around 9:35 am in the Sierra Nevada Masters Swim. On Sunday morning Aug. 7, 2005, Ken and training partner, Craig Klass, two time water polo Olympian 88 and 92, will be doing two lengths of Donner for training. Ken could be available for interviews during this weekend. His website at www.swimfar.org. Ken can be contacted by phone at 925-552-1177 or 925-683-4610. His e-mail is kharmon@rpm-mortgage.com. We have been hired to cast the upcoming Kevin Costner/Ashton Kutcher film entitled 'The Guardian'. It will shoot in New Orleans beginning November 14, 2005 and film through February 2006. This film documents the intensive training process of US Coast Guard rescue swimmers and their personal and physical sacrifices required of the job. Therefore, we need to cast swimmers (actors) to portray students of the 'A' school for the Coast Guard Rescue School. The actors cast for these roles will begin training at the Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers training center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina in September or October. These actors (swimmers) will be part of an ensemble cast that will work throughout the production. We will cast the remaining roles in the film in New Orleans later this year. But for now.......we need to look for competitive swimmers of any ethnicity who would be comfortable in challenging ocean conditions (including athletes who compete in Water Polo, Diving, Crew, Triathlons, or are certified life guards). This is an opportunity for you to contact local swim clubs, universities (for students who have just graduated), military bases, reservists, etc., to land a role for run of show. Obviously, we are looking initially for actors who are very good swimmers. But if you so desire to go outside your agency, we recommend that. This is a unique casting challenge. The other items involves changes in the Breaststroke rule that was adopted by US Masters Swimming at it convention in Greensboro, NC last weekend. This rule will be in effect at tomorrows Alan Liu Memorial meet in Mountain View. michael -------- LATyCAR To LMSC Chairs, USMS House of Delegate members, and other interested parties; Please be advised USMS has been notified by Orban Mendoza (President of A.S.U.A. /U.A.N.A.) that members who participate in the ALL AMERICAS - LatyCar Championships could be subject to suspension for a minimum period of one year according to FINA Rule GR.4.5. FINA GR4 deals with unauthorized relations, the text can be found at www.fina.org/rules/GR/rules_gr1.htm#4 . At this time we do not know definitively what actions, if any, will be taken by FINA, ASUA or LATyCAR. Dale Neuburger (USAS President and FINA Bureau Vice President), Rob Copeland (USMS President) and other USMS leaders continue to lobby for our members to participate in this event without adverse impact to their eligibility. However, it is our responsibility to inform our members of possible consequences. If you know of any of Masters athletes who are registered for this event, please pass this information on to them. Also, inform your athletes that after conversations with the meet organizer the event will proceed as planned. We will continue to work towards finding a compromise solution that is in the best interests of USMS and our members. I will communicate any further developments via follow-up emails. Rob Copeland President - United States Masters Swimming ====== BREASTSTROKE RULE INTERPRETATION INTERPRETATION: The official interpretation for the changes to the breaststroke (101.2) is that during, or at the end of the arm pull-down of the first stroke after the start and after each turn, a single downward butterfly kick is allowed, but not required, followed by a breaststroke kick. During the pull-down, if a downward butterfly kick is taken, it must be followed by a breaststroke kick. It is not permissible to take only a downward butterfly kick without then taking a normal breaststroke kick. The downward butterfly kick is not permissible prior to the arm pull-down. In addition, there is now a requirement for all movements of the legs to be "in the same horizontal plane and without alternating movement". This was previously not included in our rules. BACKSTROKE TOES ABOVE WATER INTERPRETATION: The official interpretation for the change to the backstroke rules is that the toes are no longer required to be under the surface of the water at the start. However, the toes are still not allowed to be above the lip of the gutter or curled over the lip of the gutter. The change was made so that when full-face pads are used (pads that extend above the gutter) there is no requirement to have the toes under the water. From a practical standpoint there is no change when using touch pads that hang on the pool gutter. NOTE: This interpretation is subject to change based upon further consultations with FINA at a meeting scheduled for October. (ED NOTE This means that you could be dqed for something that is changed later). There were a couple of minor changes to the backstroke about the turn and the finish.
