USMS SHORT COURSE YARDS CHAMPIONSHIPS COMING TO PACIFIC At the 2007 USMS Convention the House of Delegates chose Clovis to be the organizing committee for the 2009. The new Clovis North High School will be the site of the Championships. The Championships will take place in May 2009. The long course meters championships were awarded to Indianapolis. CHANGE IN CHAMPIONSHIPS SCORING RULE FAILS Pacific Masters sponsored legislation to change the team scoring at national championships. Pacific wanted to break up the scoring into regional clubs (that have members from many places of a geographical area (state teams)) and club teams that have a single pool or common ownership. Under convention rules the change required a 2/3 majority. It failed by 4 votes. Next year Pacific Plans to reintroduce the measure. Next year it will only require a simple majority and Pacific is hopeful it will easily pass. MAGERY MEYER INJURED Margery Meyer broke her pelvis a week ago. She was at a triathlon in Santa Cruz watching Marguerite and just before the start of the swim someone knocked her over. Fortunately her husband, Bruce, an orthopedic surgeon was there and able to quickly diagnose the problem. She broke her pelvis. Everyone wishes her a speedy recovery. RESULTS PACIFIC MASTERS SCM CHAMPIONSHIPS Nine World Records and seventeen national Records fall at Pacific Masters Short Course Meters Championships. Laura Val, Paul Carter and Rechard Todd combined to break nine world standards, while Laura Davis broke three national standards and two Walnut Creek Masters teams each broke a national relay records and Laura Val lower one national record. With over 350 Masters athletes competing at the three day annual championships, 55 year old Laura Val went on a tear. Seven swims Six world records Saturdays first event was the 100 Backstroke. Laura lowered her own record by a third of a second. The sixth event of the day was the 100 freestyle, Laura swim a 1:02.36 again lowering her own record. The next event was the 50 fly, the only event Laura did not set lower a World record, she broke her own 50 Fly by 0.02 seconds and came within 0.22 of the Judy Wilson's world record. In the last event of the day, Laura and Menlo Masters Jana Matena were in the same heat. Jana said after the event said she planned to swim hard to win the heat but Laura does not give you an inch. Swimmng hard, Jana won the heat by two seconds but Laura became the first woman 55+ to swim the 800 Meter freestyle under 10 minutes. On Sunday, Laura lowered the 100 Fly record, then lowered the 200 back record and then finished out the day swimming the 400. Margee Curran, Jana Matena and Laura Val swam in the same heat. Margee won the heat at 4:43.60 edging Jana and Laura swam it in 4:47.03 and lowering the 400 freestyle record. Paul Carter (Unattached) broke the 100 Fly record (58.01 - taking 2 seconds off the WR); Richard Todd (TCAM) broke the WR in the 100 Br (1:20.71) and the 200 Breast (2:59.11). National Records Broken include the160+ 400 Mixed Medley Relay (4:28.64 - WCM R Santos, A Mikuni, L Ward and L Crittenden - breaking the 1995 TOC record by over 4 seconds). 288+ 200M Medley relay (2:46.41 WCM J Perilman, N Stupfel, E Hayworth, R Mayo). Laura Davis (WCM) broke the national records in 100 Fly(1:03.67), 200 IM (2:24.25 ), and the 200 Fly (2:23.78). There are no world records in the 18-24 age group. There were many great races to watch. In the fastest heat of the 200 freestyle Walnut Creeks Andy Nonaka and Andy Brown (both 25-9) held off the Manatee Ili Selinger (30-34) swimming in an outside lane. Craig Dennis's sone Andrew swam in his first meet for many years cam back to swim after Craig told him "it's masters, you can set your own interval, you can do as much or as little as you want, you could even move over a lane and do another stroke -- it is your workout to choose..." Craig then swam a 1:00.45 in the 100 back to win the event in the 30-34 men. In a fun race, Michael Heaney and Kerry O'Brien (both of Walnut Creek) had a grudge match against each other in the 100 Backstroke - an event that is neither athletes best stroke. With the luck of the draw, both were seeded in the two middle lanes. With the hundreds of swimmers cheering them on 50 year old Coach O'Brien beat the 41 year old Heaney by two seconds. We hope that you will enjoy the holiday with your friends and family. Pacific Masters is made up primarily of volunteers. It is only through those volunteers that we have the great programs that we have come to expect. There has been a lot of hard work by these volunteers that goes into the running of Pacific Masters Swimming. I am very thankful that we have them: Nancy Ridout has been our registrar for a long time. She is also our Top Ten chairman. She answers all the calls people have about Pacific Masters. I believe that Pacific is the largest LMSC because of the hard work of Nancy. If anyone has a question about Masters swimming, she either answers the question or finds out the answer and then gets back to the person with the question. Barry Fasbender has been our Vice President of Operations. He is also our sanctions chair. Every meet that Pacific sanctions has to be reviewed by Barry before it is granted a sanction. He reviews the meet sheet and works with the meet director to be sure that everything is properly done. Karen Dugan has been out secretary for the past two years. She takes the minutes of the general meeting and the executive board meetings. After writing the minutes, the minutes have to be communicated to all 110 Pacific Masters clubs. Joanne Bervan is our newsletter editor. She works on six editions every year. All eight pages have to be written, checked and rechecked. Then it has to be sent to the magazine people so it makes it on time. Jennifer Zietler has been our Treasurer for the past two years. She made sure that everyone was paid on time. She just became a teacher which has very much limited her extra time. We thank her for the her work over the past two years. Cindy Clements has done a phenomenal job working with the Open Water Directors to produce great open water events. Cindy had to be sure that the safety rules were adhered to and that all of the paper work was done and properly turned it. Then after it is turned it, there are usually errors that have to be corrected. Thank you Cindy for the great job that you did over the past few years. Bill Grohe has been the At-Large chair for the past two years. Bill has worked hard with new clubs and has worked to get new meets for Pacific Masters swimmers. Kerry O'Brien and Brian Stack have been the coaches chair for the past few years. They have had the experience to work with the coaches all the while working with their own teams. Thank you Kerry and Brian. Every meet needs officials. Caroline Lambert our officials chair has been taking the names of all the officials who have worked Masters meets. This data base will be available so that we can get our meets properly officiated. Leianne Crittenden worked hard to get Clyde Wilson to speak on nutrition at the Olympic Club for our members. Over 60 people attended the presentation. Barbara Thomas, as the Administrative Vice President worked very diligently to get the all the paperwork done for Pacific Masters Swimming. As a very able writer she wrote many of nomination letters that we send to USMS national. She worked tirelessly for Pacific Masters, I am thankful that she work for us for the past few years. I have missed her since her untimely passing. To all the Meet directors and volunteers, we could not have had the meets and the working of Pacific Masters without your help. You are the unsung heroes of Pacific Masters. I am thankful for all of you and I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.
