RESULTS PACIFIC MASTERS LONG COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS NATIONAL RECORDS BROKEN I did not see that the USF team broke the national record in the 400M Womens Free Relay 72-99 1 USF-PC 'A' 4:30.00 4:24.38N 1) Huang, Chelsea W20 2) Kropp, Julia F W22 3) Miller, Molly K W24 4) Huang, Jessica W24 2008 COACH OF THE YEAR The criteria we examine when selecting a Coach of the Year include the technical excellence of the nominees; the level of achievement of their swimmers, whether it be setting records and winning national titles, or swimming in a very first meet; the coaches' service to the Community, both in Masters Swimming and in their local communities--do they publish, host events, support their swimmers on the road? Do they create a welcoming environment for swimmers from other teams when the drop in? Are their teams focused, spirited and cheerful? How well do they address the special needs of their swimmers? Are they creative and passionate? The seven nominees for 2008 have these qualities in abundance--so much so that we tend to take them for granted in all Pacific Masters coaches. But it is the prevalence of these high standards in our local coaches that makes Pacific Masters what it is today--the largest and top to bottom most talented LMSC in the country. It's not the weather. It's not the economy. It's the coaches that keep Pacific Masters on top. This wasn't an easy choice, as a strong case could be made for every one of the nominated candidates. And this year, we had a bunch of them. The coaches nominated are Steve Linz of Sierra Nevada Masters, Rob Torgerson of Foutaingrove Athletic Club, Dick Jacobberger of Oakwood Masters, Christine Lockhart of Chico Masters, Mike Lynch of Peninsula Covenant Masters, Blythe Lucero of Berkeley Aquatic Masters and Laureen Welting of The Olympic Club. Also nominated, but set aside for this award are three previous winners--Kerry O'Brien of Walnut Creek Masters, Brian Stack of Manatee Aquatic Masters, and Valeriy Boryeko of USF Masters. In our case, 2008 Pacific Masters Coach of the Year is that of Laureen Welting. She has been coaching at the Olypic Club for eight years. She works with swimmers all ability levels, from the seniors. She coaches elite masters swimmers, membership at large, young swimmers and old swimmers. She has been a coach on deck at Nationals working to help swimmers who did not come with a coach. Congratulation Laureen!!! We would hope that those who took the time to write letters in support of their coach would give their coach a copy of those letter. It is the support of the swimmers that encourage the coach to dig harder and work harder for their swimmers. Thanks to all who wrote in support of their coach. - - - Chris Campbell, Coaches Committee Chair UPCOMING : PACMASTERS MONTHLY MEETING The Pacific Masters Swimming Monthly meeting will be on Wednesday 23 July at the aquatic class room at the Clarke Swim Center, Heather Farms, Walnut Creek. All teams are encouraged to send a member and all members are invited to attend. DETAILS TO COME THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS "Our dear friend Julie Hulet who was a many time Donner Lake swimmer (going back 25-30 years) , Blue Hooter team captain for the relay across Lake Tahoe (she's done at least 25 of those too) died suddenly of heart attack on weekend of July 12 at age 56. There are about ten of us swimming at Donner and dedicating the swim to her. She has T-shirts and later towels going back to the very beginning of the Donner swim and the Tahoe Relays. Granted the last couple years she has been less active, but she deserves some recognition. "There were almost 400 people at her memorial. The school gym seating was packed left with standing room only. She was a Special Ed. teacher to middle school kids and beloved. She also taught sign language starting at the Fremont School for the deaf and bringing her talent to Toulumne County in the late 80's teaching deaf and hearing people to communicate with each other. She was a very special person, wonderful wife (she and Ben were always totally in love), mother (to Bret and Grant), friend. She leaves a big hole in our community."
