He is putting swim caps from all over the United States on one of the walls in the USMS Charlotte office. CLUB REGISTRATION 2008 THIS IS CLUB REGISTRATION ONLY It's that time again. The PMS 2009 Club Renewal Form hs been sent to club registrars. (if you have not recieved a copy contact Nancy Ridout). Any club that returns the completed form and fee so that's it's received in the Pac Masters office by October 31st will receive $10 off the fee. If you mail them by October 25th, you should be safe to make out your check for $55, rather than $65. This is why we are encouraging you to renew your club early. On November 1st, both online and paper registrations for 2009 will be open. If a swimmer tries to register online and his or her club has not renewed, he or she will be automatically registered as Unattached. This will be frustrating for the swimmer and embarrassing for the club. In the past, Nancy could just hold the forms and checks until the club renewed. This year, with the popularity of online registration, the options are either the club is on the pull-down list or Unattached. I separated my right shoulder yesterday while playing tennis with my daughter- we were playing a rough game. This, of course, means that I cannot do the 1500 at the upcoming short course meters championships which brings both good news and bad news. The bad news is that I can not swim the 1500. The good news is I cant swim the 1500. I was reading a book about staying young, it said that one should try to do more things with your non dominant hand. Well I am in that learning phase. Eating is much different now that the hand moving to my mouth is the left hand rather than right. This may be a good thing, as I am definately eating slower. Putting on socks and shoes is a challenge. I am used to putting socks on with two hands, it is so strange to use only one hand and tying shoelaces with limited access of my right hand means I have to think about what I am doing- it is a brain teaser. All in all, I was fortunate. I could have injured myself more more severely that what I did (I once cracked a bone playing tennis, but that is another story). While I will be in a sling for a few weeks, I know that the challenges that I face for the next few weeks are only minor setbacks and a not permanent problem. Have a good week - see you at the championships. (I will be the official with arm in a sling). michael -- michael w. moore michael at mwmoore.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have the best LMSC and it is because of our coaches and everyone who participates. It was very important that Rob heard from you about Masters Swimming; about what you think is good about the program and where we can improve. By speaking with you he heard more ideas about how USMS can better server you, our members. Rob also swam at the meet where he took a first and a couple of seconds in the very competitive 35-39 age group. Saturday, after the meet, Rob had dinner with coaches, Pacific Masters Committee members, officials and members of the Walnut Creek organizing committee, before leaving for Charlotte. Vern Scott Inducted into Triathlon Hall of Fame Verne Scott, a long-time Masters swimmer and a former chairman of Pacific Masters, will be inducted into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class of inductees. In the 1980s Verne dedicated his time and efforts to the establishment of the Triathlon Federation (USA Triathlon) and served as the USA Triathlon executive director. Verne began his involvement in USMS in 1974 after years of involvement in swimming at the age-group level, when he recognized the lack of an adult program in Davis, Calif., and decided to initiate a Masters program. In 1974, Verne started the Davis adult program with 11 athletes; the Davis Masters program now has almost 700 members. Vern's daughter, Patty, is the coach of Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters. I can almost raise my arm over my head. I have not been in the pool in three weeks, which is not a good thing. I tend to eat the same amount whether I am exercising or not. So this week, I am getting back in the water and leave it to the coach if I am doing one arm crawl or just doing a lot of kicking. When I was at the orthopedic doctors office, I thought it was amusing that in the exam room there was an Apple monitor attached to an HP computer. The monitor certainly was high resolution and I could see in the x-ray how there is a separation between the two clavicle and the shoulder. From a technical standpoint, I was amazed at the resolution and sharpness of the digital picture. The picture was very sharp. I just wish is was not my shoulder I was looking at. But who knows, soft tissue does not show up on x-rays and the doctor would like to do an MRI. I will know this week if I will be looking at the soft tissue in my shoulder area on those Apple monitors. The USMS 2009 National Championship is in Clovis. The championships are in our LMSC and I hope that all of you consider competing at the meet. The meet in a couple of weeks is a chance to see the competition pool and to swim in them. It is also a chance to scout out the hotels in the area. I am fortunate to have a pool available very close to where I work. On Monday, I went to the pool to do a little kicking. After talking to the coach for a couple of minutes, he said I should enter the water by the ladder. So I went to the ladder and started entering the water. I remembered why I like to jump in. The water is cool and I want to enter quickly, then start swimming to warm up. When I had entered to mid thigh, I thought I would just jump in and get it over with - Mistake. I never realized how much the water pushes against the arm and the arm push against the shoulder. At least I did not jump in very far. The shoulder only bothered me for a few minutes after getting in the water. I made a note not to jump in the water while the shoulder is healing. I am not a person who regularly just kicks in the water. When forced, I do the whip kick and I am still slow. My flutter kick is strong enough to get my legs close to the surface, but rarely with much forward speed. Well, when you have a bunch of lemons, lets make lemon aid - this will be a time to work on my kicking and hope that it will improve. The goal was to kick 1,000 yards. I would break up the 1,000 into blocks of 100. The first 16 laps were very slow as I was trying to find a comfortable way to kick. I wanted to find a comfortable position for my arm, so my shoulder would not ache too much. I could not stick my arm forward, so I tried with my arm along my right side. Well I tried, the shoulder ached when I tried that. I tried another position. The shoulder felt best when I put my right hand on my chest. After the first 400, I started to feel better when kicking. I also picked up a little speed. I actually passed the snail that was slithering on the deck. Finally, after the 10 100s I got out of the water. I was careful on the ladder. I primarily used my left arm when exiting, but I did have to balance with my right hand and arm. The shoulder let me know when I was pulling too hard with arm. On Tuesday, I went to the pool again. When getting in the water, I went down to the last step on the ladder, then put my right hand on my chest and crossed that arm with my left arm before jumping backwards into the water. I did find that I can lightly scull with my right hand and I can raise my arm higher with no ache or pain. Tuesday, I started kicking again, one hundred backstroke kick, then flutter kick on the chest. I found that I was starting to get a sense of balance. I remembered to keep my hips up when flutter kicking. On my back I could kick faster to the other end, than I could on my chest. When on my chest, I would look at the little tiles on the bottom as I kicked. I could tell I was not going very fast, but I was going faster than Monday. I swam the 1000 a little faster than on Monday. During the day, the shoulder would ache, but I would be doing other things, so the ache was a little bothersome, but not a big deal. In bed, there was not much else to do, the shoulder would ache and there was nothing to do to take my mind off the ache. For the prior week, I had been taken one Vicodin before going to bed. The ache went away and I could sleep for the six to eight hours. Tuesday night I took one tablet before going to bed. About three am, I woke up and my shoulder was bothering me. I moved the arm from crossing my chest to straight out along my right side. That did not work. I moved to my back and cross my arm, still bothered me then I moved the arm to my side. I did not want to get out of bed. Finally after about 30 minutes, I got out of bed, took a tablet and went back to bed; the ache gradually went away and in 30 minutes I was asleep. Wednesday was physical therapy day. I was able to move the arm with a greater range of motion than the previous week. Thursday, back in the pool. Still getting in by the ladder. I went into the kicking routine. I started using my left arm and did a one arm crawl and the one are fly. When kicking I am moving my right hand in the water and pushing the water. I kicked faster and on Thursday I was able to get the thousand finished faster than the previous two days. So I swam another 100. I was able to swim the 1100 faster than the thousand I kicked on Monday. Things are going slow, but I can see improvement in my right arms range of motion. I can raise my arm, but not all the way, yet. Oh well, next week will be better. Have a good week. michael -- michael w. moore michael at mwmoore.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am kicking faster and was able to kick 1150 yards. I am trying to add a little more distance each day. It makes me think that I am kicking faster. I was able to put my arm straight out when kicking, so that when I was kicking breaststroke, I started moving my arms to pull a little. It felt ok in the water, I would pull hard with my left (ok) arm and just pulled a little with my right arm. About two hours later and into the night, the shoulder told me that perhaps I made a mistake. The shoulder ached for most of the afternoon and evening. Tuesday, I was back in the water kicking again. I did not make the mistake of pulling with my arm while doing the breaststroke kick. With my arms out forward, I thought I would try to do the butterfly kick, so I pushed off the wall. With my arms fully extended, I did the downward part of the butterfly. I never realized how much pressure the kick puts on the shoulders. After one length, I decided that I will put off working on the butterfly until another day. When my daughter came back to the states after being a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho she brought back a mulamu for me. A mulamu is a decorated stick of hard wood about 3 ft (1M) long that is used for walking or fighting. If a woman touches the mulamu, the mulamu looses its special power. One of the exercises that the physical therapist gave me was to hold a dowel or stick horizontally, then move the dowel to the right and then to the left. I did not have a dowel, so I took my mulamu and held it horizontally while moving it from the right to the left and back again. I hope that the decorated stick still has it special properties. It is through their dedication to the sport that Pacific Masters is the largest regional group in United States Masters Swimming. I am also very thankful for all the meet directors and volunteers who spend hours organizing pool meets and open water events so that our swimmers can compete in over thirty events throughout the year. I am thankful for the Pacific Masters Committee, who work hard for Masters Swimming in Northern California and Nevada. There are many jobs to be done and they ensure that the myriad tasks of running an LMSC is done. I am also very thankful for Nancy Ridout, our registrar, who does much of the adminstrative work of the LMSC. When people call about Pacific Masters, her voice is what people hear. Besides the registration, she takes care of the top ten, which requires reviewing all the meet records. I have a great job as chairman, because of all the work that is done by everyone in the Pacific Masters family and for that I am very thankful. -------- WINNERS SHORT COURSE YARDS MEET The 15th Annual Reno Winners Meet will be at the Northwest Pool in Reno, Nevada on Saturday December 6th. SWIM PROGRAMS IN NOVATO A series of swim stroke clinics is taking place at Meridian Sports Club Rolling Hills (Novato). Each month the Club is offering a different stroke clinic. Their first launch was a freestyle stroke clinic on November 15th. Up next is a backstroke clinic on Saturday, December 13th. January will be breaststroke, February will be butterfly, and March will be Starts & Turns (dates TBA on those three). All the clinics will be repeated throughout the year. The clinics are taught by masters swimmers Cokie Lepinski and Susie Powell of the Rolling Hills Mud Sharks. You don't not have to be a club member to participate in these clinics. Each clinic is three hours in length, with a format of part land, part water. About 90 minutes is spent in the water and swimmers learn or improve their stroke through a series of drills. Swimmers eliminate bad habits, develop a more efficient and smooth stroke, improve their breathing, and see and feel their stroke change in just a short time. Participants are given a packet of resources complete with all drills written out as well as a laminated card with the drills to take to the pool and practice after the clinic. If you'd like information on this clinic contact either Cokie or Susie. Cokie can be reached at swimnut at mac.com or 415-827-5672. Susie can be reached by email at swimsp at comcast.net. Another program offered by veteran Mud Shark masters swimmer, Maggie Tevis, is the "Swim A Mile in Six Weeks". Here participants practice three times a week (hour long format) for six weeks building up from just a few laps to the accomplishment of swimming a mile without stopping at the end of the six week program. Maggie has currently graduated over 75 people from this program and the transformation of the swimmers, many of whom are novice level, is phenomenal. A few have even gone on to join our masters team and many of them stay in the water after succeeding in this program. Information on this program can be obtained by emailing Maggie Tevis - margaret1948_94945 at yahoo.com or Winnie Comfort (Aquatics Director at Rolling Hills) - winnie at rollinghillsclub.com. When doing the freestyle, I had to concentrate on kicking when moving my left arm. The right arm was kinda out in front, but I could not stretch it out, so there was very little stream lining. After seeing the physical therapist, on Wednesday, she said I could do the freestyle, but dont pull with the right arm, just move in the general direction of how it should be moving. Doing the breaststroke was ok, but again not too much right arm pressure. I should not try the backstroke because of all the torquing the arms does when recovering over the water and then entering the water. I was told not to even attempt the butterfly. :-) I started out doing the freestyle. I would do two hundred free and then either kick or do another stroke. It was difficult, to remember not to push to hard and then remember to do a six beat kick at the same time. I can only concentrate on one thing at a time. The freestyle was rather humorous if you were watching me. I was veering to the right. A left arm pulling through the water and a right arm that was just moving through the waster sent me into the wall going out and into the lane line coming back. Over the past ten years, I have gotten into the habit of doing open turns. During the last year, the coach has tried to convince me to do flip turns. With the open turn, I grab the wall with my right hand, with a right shoulder still bothering me, I could feel the weight of my body still going forward when my arm grabs the wall to turn. When doing the freestyle, I saw the wall from just beyond the flags and thought I would try a flip turn. It was a MISTAKE and made the most pitiful flip turn I have ever made (and I have made many pitiful ones) . I as not going very fast. I have always started the turn by using my hands at my side to press down to start the turn - the left hand could press water normally to start the flip - the right could barely push down. (instead of evenly turning over evenly, I turned over and twisted to the right) I was not going very fast and just barely hit the wall with my outstretch legs. Once I pushed off, I did a great one arm streamline - the left was out there nice and smooth. I could not get my right arm next to my head.I wound up pushing the water with my right arm. I did not make it half way to the flags before I had to start my stroke. I have never realized how much I twist and turn when getting into my car. I use my arms to push and pull with getting out of the car. Over the weekend, I was pushed out of the car with my right foot not in a straight line with the rest of my body. I did something to the knee. I could walk fine, but when I climbed stairs, the area under the knee cap hurt,(For the rest of the week I paid attention to how I entered and exited my car this pain went away in a few days). I only mention it as when I was trying to push off the wall with more pressure on my right leg than my left, the right knee hurt - I barely pushed off the wall. I did notice that if I was careful in pushing evenly off the wall, it did not hurt. I have not been doing quick turns - only slow deliberate turns to protect the right shoulder and right leg. Monday of this week, I was feeling good. I swam sets of two hundred free following by a hundred of kicking or breaststroke (I even tried back stroke). I swam five sets - 1500 yards - and it felt pretty good. Also during the day, I did the other exercises I was supposed to do, including moving a light weight from my hips to reach out. The next day I got in the water thinking that I would do 1800 years - that is six 300's. It would be the first time I have swam a mile in two months. At 700 yards, my shoulder was starting to ache and at 800 yards, I said to myself that 1000 yards would be a good day and it was. The freestyle is tough to swim as I can fully press with my left arm. Pressing hard with the right arm causes an ache in the shoulder. I have tried to concentrate on the right arm when pulling, but when I do that I go back into a slow ineffective two beat kick. The breaststoke is getting there. I cannot pull very hard with the right arm. With the backstroke, I cannot raise my right arm all the way and when putting the right hand in the water, there is no way that I can pull the water very effectively. I have been trying to make the motions in these two strokes, if just to stretch out the arm. The progress has been slow, but there is progress. I am jumping into the water and not feeling the shoulder being pulled. I have been able to start doing the freestyle and I can raise my arms higher than I could weeks ago. Have a good week and a happy thanksgiving michael -- michael w. moore michael at mwmoore.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Don won the gold medal in the 100 M Breaststroke and the 4x100 Medley relay. In 1989, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Bob Strand who competed against Don said "I have swam against every great breastroker in that era and he was the toughest of them all. You had to beat him he would never beat himself. Tremendous mental concentration. I can't tell you how many times he would look over, a few minutes before a race, and say "is this fun or what??"" I was swimming groups of 300, two hundred free and 100 kick. I did six of them and for the first time since October, I swam one mile and it felt pretty good. I was sore after the swim and a couple of hours later, I did not feel any ache or pain in the shoulder. I had not been looking at the clock, one reason is it is difficult to look at the digital read out from the wall lane. I also did not want to look at it, as the clock does not lie and I was not swimming 50's very fast, but after being in the water for 30 minutes, I raise my head and then took off. I swam the 50 in about 50 seconds, not enough to get the heart rate up, but 10 seconds faster than the one minute 50 I swam the last time I looked. On Wednesday, there was a woman swimmer in the lane next to me. I had pretty much warmed up. I would swim, but the heart rate was not getting up. I was hanging on the wall and she took off from the wall, I took off and swam next to her. At the first turn I was actually ahead of her. I stayed ahead for the next 75. The shoulder felt good at the end of the hundred and for the first time in two month, the heart rate was up - it felt great! That afternoon, I was at the physical therapist and I told her about the "fast" 100 that I swam. She smiled and said that for the next couple of weeks, maybe I should only try to swim one length fast. After some serious negotiation, we settled on a "fast" 100. She also gave me a few arm exercises to do with a five pound weight. I could work out hard but I should also take some time to rest, between the hard workouts. The next day, I saw 2000 yards - another first. Last Thursday was the last day the pool was open at school, and Friday for the first time in over two months, I went back to the Koret Center at USF to swim. It was great to see my lane mates and to say hi to them. On Monday, I got in the water and started to warm up. I swam 300 yards at my normal warm up pace, the arm felt good. Then I thought, maybe I should not be swimming this fast, but it was good to swim at an almost normal speed. I started the set that the coach gave me and at about 1400 yards, the shoulder started to ache. The problem with a mild ache is, is the ache from over use of the broken part that is becoming better, or is it because I have not used that body part in the recent past. The sets on Tuesday were divided into 450 yard cycles, I swam five cycles - 2350 yards. There were a couple of times when I looked over to the next lane and kept up with the swimmer, but never more than a 100 yard spurt. (when they were swimming breaststroke and I was swimming crawl, I did not have a problem keeping up with them). This morning, I got up at 5 am for the 6 am work out. I took a shower and while in the shower, the shoulders felt tight- not really an ache but just tight. Feeling tired and listening to the news where the announcer said it was 36 degrees, I decided that today would be a rest day and crawled back into my warm bed. michael -- michael w. moore michael at pacificmasters.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: From pacmasterupdate at PacificMasters.org Sun Dec 21 22:59:41 2008 From: pacmasterupdate at PacificMasters.org (Update on Pacific Masters Swimming sent to members and friends.) Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2008 19:59:41 -0800 Subject: [PacMasterUpdate] The Update 21 December 2008 Message-ID: PACIFIC MASTERS MISSION STATEMENT: As adopted by the Pacific Masters Committee the Mission of Pacific Masters is: Pacific Masters Swimming welcomes anyone who would like to gain and maintain fitness through swimming and encourages programs to foster this mission. -------- MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY HANUKKAH HAPPY NEW YEAR On behalf of Nancy Ridout, PacMasters Registrar, the Pacific Masters Executive Committee and the Pacific Masters Board, we would like to wish you the merriest of Christmases, a joyous festival of lights and the great new year. ---- END OF YEAR GIVING I was asked by a couple of people, they said at the end of year, they have a few dollars and like to donate it to community activities and then asked if there were swimming related charitable organizations. There are two I would like to mention. The first is the United States Masters Swimming Endowment fund. The Fund has made grants into health related studies. Joel Stager of Indiana Univeristy has done one study on swimmers. He was looking to see if swimming had effect upon aging markers (blood cholesterol, HDL and LDL; triglycerides and others). The study expected to find in elite athletes those markers would be for a younger person (they have not aged as much as the general population). They were surprised to find that average swimmers did not age as much as the general population. This year they are funding a study on shoulder blade motility and whether specific exercises could prevent injury (I am sure one of the results will be a warning about tripping when playing tennis). You can contribute to the Endowment fund by either adding an amount when re-registering on your Pacific Masters application or by sending a check to United States Masters Swimming PO Box 185 Londonderry, NH 03053-0185 The second is the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is in Ft Lauderdale, Florida and houses artifacts of swimming and much of the history of swimming, they have a library devoted to swimming and its history. You can go there and find out about the General Slocum disaster - the General Slocum was a steamship that caught fire in New York's East River. More than 1000 people died in the accident making it the worst loss of life disaster in New York until 9-11. Most people on the steamship did not know how to swim. From this disaster, came the realization that people needed to know how to swim and the start of swimming lessons for the general public. One can see suits from the many eras of swimming from the wools suits that were used until the 1950's (talk about a drag suit). It has Donna De Varona's Olympic suit and already as some things from the 2008 Olympics. It is the place where one can see the history of swimming and I strong ask you to join or make a contribution. http://www.ishof.org or ISHOF One Hall of Fame Drive Ft. Lauderdale FL 33316 Of course when you are in the Miami Fort Lauderdale area, stop in. Both are IRS 501 c 3 charities and deserving of our support. The web site is in its holiday finery and I am going to take a couple of weeks off and try not to gain to much weight. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! michael -- michael w. moore michael at pacificmasters.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
