Things are going along very well. It is a new high school and there are no junior or seniors there which means that the student parking lots will not have students parking there. The hotels that are listed are about a 20 minute drive from the pool. The organizing committee has printed directions from the hotels to the pool. USE THE DIRECTIONS and not Mapquest or google maps. Both set of directions from them will lead you by schools, which will slow you down in the morning and afternoon. I would suggest that you drive, if you are able. Northern Fresno is spread out in typical suburban fashion if you are staying at a hotel, your choice of places to eat is severely limited. There will be a lot of shaded seating available on the west side of the main competition pool (it is the western pool - the two pools are aligned north-south). There will be a lot of space for teams to put up their own tents, the space will be in back of the bench seating. The main competition pool is deep and looks pretty fast. The second pool is deep where there will be competition. This is the first meet where the team competition will be broken between the regional clubs and the "local" clubs. All Pacific Masters clubs are local club and will be competing against like clubs. The one mile long distance national championship will be held at Millerton Lake which is a short distance away. The championship will be held at the same place that the Millerton Lake meet was held last year. The water temperature is expected to be between 68 to 70. Electronic chips will be used to automatically record your time. (for those who have a significant other or for those who think they have not left enough money in California or would like to try to get their trip money back, there is an Indian Gambling casino about a mile from the starting point - remember those gaming places were not able to build those palaces because they were losing money to the players). -- michael w. moore michael at pacificmasters.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is the time to publically show your coach how much you mean to him. Coaches are underpaid and overworked. They do the job for the love of the sport and Pacific Masters honors one coach a year as the Coach of the Year. If you want to nominate your coach I would suggest that you write a one page letter telling the committee why s/he should be the coach of the year. Read the nomination procedures (at bottom of page), let the committee know what the coach has meant to you and your team mates. After you write your letter and if you have letters from your team mates send it to chairman at pacificmasters.org. Unfortunately, there is only one person who can be coach of the year. Many times the coach of the year has been nominated before. Those who have been nominated will be listed at the long course championships (where the coach of the year presentation is made). Also since Pacific has such a plethora of great coaches, we have not yet awarded the Coach of the Year to the same person twice. We are limited to 20,000 subscribers on the list, so it is time to do a little pruning. I went back to the 2007, 2008 and the current rosters and pulled all the email addresses from those lists. All members on those lists will be re-subscribed to the updated list. If have not registered with Pacific Masters, but wish to continue getting the Update, you can subscribe by going to the Pacific Masters web page after 11 May. COACH OF THE YEAR The coach of the nominations are due at the May Pacific Masters meeting (20 May 2008). This is the time to publicly show your coach how much you mean to him. Until FINA provides the definitive list of banned swimsuits and specific actions on the 136, we should not report any suit as banned in a USMS sanctioned event. This was in todays SJ Mercury News: "Rajeev Motwani, beloved in high tech world - including Google - dead at 47 By Pete Carey Rajeev Motwani, 47, the Stanford University computer science professor who mentored Google's co-founders when they were graduate students, has died from a freak accident at his Atherton home. Motwani apparently drowned Friday morning in a backyard swimming pool at the home he purchased three years ago. Friends said he did not know how to swim, but was planning to take lessons. While little official information was available, friends speculated that Motwani may have slipped and fallen in the pool. Paramedics were called when his body was found, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:28 p.m., according to the San Mateo County coroners office." As swimmers, we dont think twice about getting in the pool. We are confident in the water, we swim thousands of yards a month with confidence. It is part of us, it is who we are. Yet there are thousands of people in our area who do not swim either because they are scare of the water or they just never learned to swim as a child. There are many community college that have swimming programs for the beginning swimmer Los Medanos City College of San Francisco De Anza Foothill Indian Valley Contra Costa Chabot College Fresno City College Napa Valley Sierra College are just of few of the community colleges that have classes in swimming. Obviously the situation was startling and quite scary for everyone. The wonderful news is that Ken is doing well. Expert diagnosis and care at Stanford Hospital led to a procedure that placed 5 stents around his heart to open several blockages due to Advanced Coronary Artery Disease. Then we met again with the Dr. (surgeon). He was very positive and confident and stated that he could "treat" me with the current two options that he has in mind. What he would like to do (I don't know what it's called) is go through my lower left rib cage, put a camera in there, do a few lymph node biopsies and then remove the melanoma. he feels that to get a good "margin" he needs to remove a small portion of the left upper lung lobe. He feels that this will have little impact on my breathing as the portion being taken is so small. Alot will depend on how close/attached the mass is to my Pulmonary Artery. If he is unable to proceed then he will stop and wait till I heal (In around 6 weeks I think. Then he would plan to shrink the mass (interferon, chemo or radiation) and then remove I think a portion of my Pulmonary Artery. Again, he stated he was very confident in his ability to do this as he has done many similar surgeries. The EKG came out good. My Pre-Op is scheduled at 9:40am on Thursday, June 11th and the operation is scheduled to begin at 11:40am.
