The head coach will also work in close partnership with the MVM board to implement the strategic vision of the club. o The head coach is responsible for developing a workout plan for our year-round program, running the majority of weekly morning practices, managing the coaching schedule to ensure all practices are covered, providing feedback to the swimmers, and manage stroke clinics. o The head coach will set the direction and goals of the coaching program and work with his/her assistant coaching staff effectively to implement the program. If necessary, the head coach will recruit and, with board approval, hire qualified assistant coaches that embody the MVM philosophies. o To ensure that the overall team is aligned to the same vision, the head coach will be expected to attend the monthly MVM board meetings and hold quarterly coaching staff meetings. This is a part-time hourly position. Expected hours will be approximately 15-20 hours per week, including time on deck. Hourly rate will be commensurate with experience. Alison Zamanian (w40-44), Jim Clemmons (m60-64) and Laura Val (w55-59) each broke the current world record in their age group. Jim and Alison broke the record in the first year of their new age group. Laura is in the last year of her FINA age group. CHANGE IN SWIM SUIT RULES The FINA Bureaua meeting in Bankgok, Thailand, has approved the Masters Committee recommendation that the swimwear be the same as for the elite pool swimmers. They made the ruling effective 1/1/10. (two weeks before the meeting) The USMS Rules Committee met by phone to discuss the implementation for SCY. After the Rules Committee makes a determination, that will be forwarded to the Executive Committee of USMS. When information becomes available, it will be posted on the USMasters Swimming web site and we will let you know via the update. OPEN WATER SWIMWEAR Open Water swimwear for both Men and Women, shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor shall extend below the ankle. All Open Water swimsuits shall comply with the FINA Criteria for Materials and Approval Procedures. Until June 2010, the 2009 models can be used in order to protect the athlete from sunburn, jellyfish etc. Again the Rules committee will issue a determination of how this will apply to US Masters Swimming. 2012 FINA WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2012 FINA WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held in Riccione, Italy. Dates have not be set, but when the Championships were held in 2004, the meet was held at the end of May - beginning of June. CHANGE IN SWIM SUIT RULES The FINA Bureaua meeting in Bankgok, Thailand, has approved the Masters Committee recommendation that the swimwear be the same as for the elite pool swimmers. They made the ruling effective 1/1/10. (two weeks before the meeting) The USMS Rules Committee met by phone to discuss the implementation for SCY. After the Rules Committee makes a determination, that will be forwarded to the Executive Committee of USMS. When information becomes available, it will be posted on the USMasters Swimming web site and we will let you know via the update. OPEN WATER SWIMWEAR Open Water swimwear for both Men and Women, shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor shall extend below the ankle. All Open Water swimsuits shall comply with the FINA Criteria for Materials and Approval Procedures. Until June 2010, the 2009 models can be used in order to protect the athlete from sunburn, jellyfish etc. Again the Rules committee will issue a determination of how this will apply to US Masters Swimming. CHANGE IN SWIM SUIT RULES The January swimsuit ruling made by U.S. Masters Swimming applies to all USMS sanctioned and recognized pool events (including meets and postal events). However, it does not apply to open water events. http://www.usms.org/rules/20100119swimsuits.pdf The USMS Open Water swimsuit rules have not changed from 2009 and are not impacted by FINA's recent decisions. Swimwear that was approved for pool use in 2009 is still legal for USMS sanctioned open water events in 2010. The following rules apply to open water competition: 303.6 Swimwear 303.6.1 Swimwear shall be the same as defined in articles 102.14.1 and 102.14.7. Goggles, ear plugs, watches, and grease shall be allowed. The suit shall be made of a porous material. 102.14.1 Design-The swimsuits worn for competition shall be nontransparent and conform to the current concept of the appropriate. The referee shall have authority to bar offenders from competition until they comply with this rule. 102.14.7 Advertising-Products involving tobacco, alcohol or pharmaceuticals containing drugs banned under IOC or FINA rules may not be advertised, but the advertiser's name only may be used. Offenders may be barred from competition until they comply with this rule. 303.6.2 Swim cap(s), including those made of neoprene, may be permitted. Swim caps shall be defined as head gear conforming to a traditional swim cap design and shall not extend to protect the neck or shoulders. 303.6.3 Wetsuits may be allowed at the discretion of the event director when the water temperature does not exceed 78?F. If awards are given to wetsuit competitors, they shall be awarded separately from those for non-wetsuit competitors. Any published results or records must clearly indicate which swimmers wore wetsuits. DNA For those swimmers who compete in the Bay Area Senior Games, you will be offered a chance to have your DNA tested and then you are given the results.I did it as part of the National Senior Games held last year at Stanford. I spit into a tube, then the tube is sent to a lab and later you are given a report (On-line) that you can review. The results were fascinating, it said I likely had blue eyes, I was likely tolerant to lactose and that I was an unlikely sprinter (very true).
