RESULTS PACIFIC MASTERS SCM
CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nine World Records and seventeen national Records fall at Pacific
Masters Short Course Meters Championships. Laura Val, Paul Carter and
Rechard Todd combined to break nine world standards, while Laura Davis
broke three national standards and two Walnut Creek Masters teams each
broke a national relay records and Laura Val lower one national
record.

With over 350 Masters athletes competing at the three day annual
championships, 55 year old Laura Val went on a tear.

Seven swims Six world records

Saturdays first event was the 100 Backstroke. Laura lowered her own
record by a third of a second. The sixth event of the day was the 100
freestyle, Laura swim a 1:02.36 again lowering her own record. The
next event was the 50 fly, the only event Laura did not set lower a
World record, she broke her own 50 Fly by 0.02 seconds and came within
0.22 of the Judy Wilson's world record.

In the last event of the day, Laura and Menlo Masters Jana Matena were
in the same heat. Jana said after the event said she planned to swim
hard to win the heat but Laura does not give you an inch. Swimmng
hard, Jana won the heat by two seconds but Laura became the
first woman 55+ to swim the 800 Meter freestyle under 10 minutes.

On Sunday, Laura lowered the 100 Fly record, then lowered the 200 back
record and then finished out the day swimming the 400. Margee Curran,
Jana Matena and Laura Val swam in the same heat. Margee won the heat
at 4:43.60 edging Jana and Laura swam it in 4:47.03 and lowering the
400 freestyle record.

Paul Carter (Unattached) broke the 100 Fly record (58.01 - taking 2
seconds off the WR); Richard Todd (TCAM) broke the WR in the 100 Br
(1:20.71) and the 200 Breast (2:59.11).

National Records Broken include the160+ 400 Mixed Medley Relay
(4:28.64 - WCM R Santos, A Mikuni, L Ward and L Crittenden - breaking
the 1995 TOC record by over 4 seconds). 288+ 200M Medley relay
(2:46.41 WCM J Perilman, N Stupfel, E Hayworth, R Mayo).

Laura Davis (WCM) broke the national records in 100 Fly(1:03.67), 200
IM (2:24.25 ), and the 200 Fly (2:23.78). There are no world records
in the 18-24 age group.

There were many great races to watch. In the fastest heat of the 200
freestyle Walnut Creeks Andy Nonaka and Andy Brown (both 25-9)
held off the Manatee Ili Selinger (30-34) swimming in an outside
lane.

Craig Dennis's sone Andrew swam in his first meet for many years
cam back to swim after Craig told him "it's masters, you can set
your own interval, you
can do as much or as little as you want, you could even move over a
lane
and do another stroke -- it is your workout to choose..." Craig
then swam a 1:00.45 in the 100 back to win the event in the 30-34
men.

In a fun race, Michael Heaney and Kerry O'Brien (both of Walnut Creek)
had a grudge match against each other in the 100 Backstroke - an event
that is neither athletes best stroke. With the luck of the draw, both
were seeded in the two middle lanes. With the hundreds of swimmers
cheering them on 50 year old Coach O'Brien beat the 41
year old Heaney by two seconds.
