<div>The Lake Mendocino two mile swim is Saturday 27 June at Lake
Mendocino. Last year was the first time there was a Masters Open water
swim at Lake Medocino.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>PACIFIC MASTERS LONG COURSE
CHAMPIONSHIPS</b></font></div>
<div>The 2009 Pacific Masters Long Course is going to be held at the
Chabot College Swim Complex, Hayward,California. The meet will be July
10, 11 and 12.</div>

<div>The 2009 PMS Open Water championship will take place at the Santa
Cruz Roughwater Pier Swim, August 2, 2009. Lake Mendocino is not the
championship swim this year as indicated in Swimmer Magazine.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>U.S. MASTERS SWIMMING LONG COURSE
NATIONALS</b></font> -<font color="#FF0000">First Deadline this
week</font></div>
<div>Registration for the 2009 U.S.Masters Swimming Long Course
Nationals has opened. This year the long course nationals will be at
IUPUI Pool in Indianapolis, known as very, very fast pool. There
are two deadlines, the early bird deadline is 16 June (less surcharge)
and the regular deadline is 3 July. This year the nationals will
feature the Saturday relay day where all the distances and events of
the long course relays will be contested. (Relays must be entered by 4
pm Thursday evening). Distance day is Monday 10 August (You can swim
either the 800 Fr or the 1500 Fr).</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>FINA AND THE SUITS</b></font></div>
<div>If you have been following the discussion about the FINA and the
suits in the USMS Forum, Pedro Adrega, honorary secretary of the FINA
Press Commission, is quoted as saying that the Dubai Charter is not
being applied to Masters swimming by FINA. So what was legal two
months ago is still legal. If there are changes, that get approved by
the Rules Committee and the Executive Committee, it will be reported
here. Until then, enjoy the B70.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>NATIONALS AWARDS</b></font></div>
<div><b>The USMS Club of the Year Award</b><br>
USMS clubs are constantly trying to develop programs that draw people
in, support their swimmers, and set the standard for other clubs to
follow. Initiated in 2006, this annual award publicly recognizes the
efforts of the great clubs that embody these attributes.</div>

<div><b>The USMS Fitness Award</b><br>
The United States Masters Swimming Fitness Committee annually presents
the USMS Fitness Award to individuals and organizations demonstrating
outstanding contribution to fitness activities within USMS.<br>

<div>May 15th was the opening of the 5K and 10K Meters Postal event.
If you swim the five or ten K swim you can submit your times and be

<div><font size="+1"><b>OPEN WATER 101</b></font>- Moved to Lake Del
Valle</div>
<div>Want to learn about open water swimming, but not sure how to
start? Concerned about cold water, crowded starts, open water culture,
Pacific Masters is sponsoring Open Water 101 a clinic for new and
developing open water swimmers. It will cover Breathing and sighting,
coping with panic, pack swimming, water entry and exit and mental
Preparation.</div>

<div>There will be dry land talks by Suzanne Heim-Bowen, Suzie Dods
Trevor Gillis and Lisa Hazen as well as other local, national and
international open water swimmers. The location has been moved to Lake
Del Valle. There is a limit of 50 swimmers so register early:</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>SAD NEWS</b></font></div>
<div>Paula Smart, Jeff Moxies wife, passed away this week. Paula had
been very sick for the past couple of months. Jeff is the US Masters
Swimming treasurer.</div>

<div>Judith Moore, the sister of Hugh Moore of Seattle, passed away
two weeks ago from injuries suffered in an bicycle accident. Hugh has
been the chairman of Pacific Northwest and he and his wife Jane have
been the meet directors of many of the national championships that
have been held in Federal Way.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>GOOD NEWS</b></font></div>
<div>From Bob Brittingham, about Regina: "Regina's surgery was a
total success!!! It took nearly five hours but the surgeon kept
at it until the entire melanoma was removed. Because of her
excellent condition otherwise, she is rapidly recovering. She
walks on her own several times a day, lung capacity is returning to
normal, and she is eating well. One or two days after the last
chest tube is removed she will be released to go home. We both
realize that all of your good wishes and prayers have contributed to
this happy out come. Regina and I thank you very very
much."</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>BIDDING FOR NATIONAL POOL
CHAMPIONSHIPS</b></font></div>
<div>You can create an exciting opportunity for your club by bidding
to host either the 2011 United States Masters Swimming National Short
or Long Course Championships. The USMS Championship Committee to
strongly encourage you to work with facilities within your LMSC to
consider bidding for either of these showcase events. All entries are
now processed by USMS, which takes away much tedious work from the
host. The short course meet (25 yards or meters) typically takes place
mid-May, however, it may be held anytime between April 15th and May
31st in accordance with USMS rules. The long course meet typically
takes place mid-August although its allowable range is August 1 -
September 15th.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>BIDDING FOR NATIONAL OPEN WATER
CHAMPIONSHIPS</b></font></div>
<div>The Long Distance Open Water Committee is soliciting bids for
postal events for 2011 and the Open Water events for 2011. The Postal
events are the One Hour Postal, the 3,000-6,000 yard postal and the
5,000 and 10,000 M postal Clubs are encourage to bid for those
events.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>For the open water events, in 2011 it is the West region's turn
to host and organize the one mile Open water swim, the 1 Mile cable
and the 3-6 Mile swim. The national championships would be a great way
to get swimmers from all over the US to come to your swim.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Next year Lake Del Valle wil be the venue of the 1-3 Mile
national championship. This year Millerton Lake was the scene of the
one mile national championship.</div>
