CONVENTION</b></font></div>
<div>MOUNTAIN VIEW MASTERS AND SOCIAL CLUB WINS BEST NEWSLETTER</div>
<div>The Annual best newsletter award was given to the Mountain View
Swim and Social Club. They were awarded for the fine work they
have done in communicating with their members. It was announced at the
convention that this would be the last time the award would be given
for a newsletter. The award will morph into an award for general
communication</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>KERRY O'BRIEN COACHING AWARD.</b></font></div>
<div>The Kerry O'Brien Coaching award was awarded to three Pacific
Masters coaches for their fine work in working with Masters
swimmers.</div>

<div>The U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee initiated aThe Kerry
O'Brien Coaches Award in 2008 with the goal of recognizing coaches who
are building our membership in communities throughout our country. It
has been named to honor Coach Kerry O'Brien of Walnut Creek Masters,
who embodies the passion, dedication, and heart that these coaches
bring to the pool deck. It is with the efforts of individuals like
these that U.S. Masters Swimming will most certainly move to a greater
level.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>LAKE NATOMA OPEN WATER SWIM</b></font></div>
<div>The Lake Natoma Open Water Swim, the 2009 Cold Water Challenge,
will be Saturday 26th September. The meet is organized by the Sierra
Marlins Masters. The Lake Natoma swim will be the last open water swim
in the annual open water points competition.</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>SIXTH ANNUAL ALAN LIU MEMORIAL SCM
MEET</b></font></div>
<div>Mountain View Masters is organizing the sixth Annual Alan Liu
Memorial Short Course Meters Meet. The meet will be held in the
fast Eagle Park Pool. Special awards, in memory of Coach Alan Liu,
will be given to the winners of the 400 IM in each age group and
gender, and to those who complete the "Alan Liu Animal Pentathlon,"
which includes the 400 IM, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 200 Back and 400 Free.
Award recipients for the latter are not required to win their events.
Preentry mail deadline is Wednesday 23rd.</div>

METERS PENTATHLON</b></font></div>
<div>Sac Masters 36th Annual Short Courrse Meters Pentathlon will be
on Sunday, 11 October at the Schaal Aquatic Center. The pre entry
deadline is midnight 7 October 2009. You can also enter the day of the
meet.</div>

<div>The 2009 Pacific Masters Short Course Meters Championships will
be held at the Clark Swim Center, Heather Farms, Walnut Creek. The
meet is being organized by Walnut Creek Masters. The preentry deadline
is Wednesday 7 October 2009 for on-line entries. (Mailed or hand
delivered entry deadline is 1 October).</div>

<div>The dates of the 2009 Pacific Masters Short Course Meters meet
are October 16,17 and 18. The dates in the newsletter say the same,
but the dates over the events are incorrect. The dates are Friday the
16th, Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>Richard Harley dies at</b></font></div>
<div><font size="+1"><b>New York Open Water Meet</b></font></div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Richard Harley,San Rafael salesman and high school sports
announcer died Saturday while swimming across the East River from
Manhattan to Brooklyn to raise money for a girls' school in Kenya
where one of his sons teaches, his family said.</div>
<div>Richard Harley, 59, apparently suffered a heart attack about
three minutes into the Brooklyn Bridge Race, which started at 9:45
a.m., said his wife, Evelyn Harley. Richard was an unattached swimmer
who lived in Marin.. (from SFGate.com)</div>

<div><font size="+1"><b>JACK BERTRAM</b></font></div>
<div><font size="+1"><b>WALNUT CREEK</b></font></div>
<div>On September 15th during the 10:30 practice, WCM member Jack
Bertram, 69, had an apparent heart attack while in the water
swimming. He was transported to John Muir, but unfortunately did
not pull through.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Jack came to WCM by way of the Intensive Training Camp last
March. He and wife Sylvia live in Sonoma, where Jack pretty much
swam by himself without any coaching. At the WCM Camp, Jack really got
to know the Creek coaching staff and decided he would like to come
down to Walnut Creek and get coached and swim with some really great
teammates. He was pointing towards the World Championships in Sweden
next July. Jack was retired Navy who enjoyed making "Medal
Winning" wine, some of which he graciously donated to the team

OF SWIMMERS</b></font></div>
<div>With two month to go in the registration year, Pacific Masters
has set a new records in number of swimmers with 10,524 registered
swimmers.</div>
