Barbara Gittings, Activist Since 1950s, Dead at 75
One of the true giants of the LGBT movement is gone.
Barbara Gittings, who founded the New York chapter of
the Daughters of Bilitis in 1958 and never stopped
agitating for lesbian and gay rights, died at an
assisted-living facility in Kennet Square,
Pennsylvania on February 18 after a long battle with
breast cancer. During her work with the Daughters of
Bilitis, she met her life partner, Kay Lahusen.
Gittings edited the group's publication, The Ladder,
from 1963 to 1966, and worked with Lahausen on her
1973 book, "The Gay Crusaders".
