Hi all,
Here's my own modest opinion on EC's wonderful
talents.
I think, that mr. Clapton's genius is his incredible
musicality, that comes out in his singing, guitar
playing, songwriting and bandleading.
I started following EC's career at the start of Cream
and of course in those days his guitar was the main
thing, but even then his musicality shone above most
of the other "guitar-heroes". I think, that only Peter
Green was somewhere near to EC's lyrical playing.
There's lots of sad examples of 60's heroes, who
stayed there playing the same songs and solos over and
over and nobody cares.
Guitar playing is just guitar playing, even by
Clapton. I think Clapton made a very wise move, when
he wanted to get away from his guitar-god status in
Blind Faith and Derek and Dominos. He started to
develope his songwriting and singing (and of course
in the process lost lots of guitar fans). Eric knew,
that there was always a "better" guitarist in the next
garage, but putting his personality to the singing and
songwriting, as well as his guitar, made him unique.
I know lots of people, who love Clapton's music, but
don't find these long guitar solos so unbelievable as
we do.
I'm sure he would have made a great career in stained
glass design as well.
Cheers
Ande
