Mark,

You have been very generous to the Slowhand Digest and your web site is a
great source of information and cover artwork. You have been very helpful
to me personally when I have had technical questions and I have received
some great rare material from you in our trades over the years.

I understand your frustration but would ask that you reconsider your
position. In numerous trades over the years, perhaps I've been lucky, but I
hardly remember any trades where the shows have come with gaps betwen songs
or other problems. I have made some great friends all over the world on
Slowhand and people have been very generous, and to your specific point,
very diligent in their burning of CDs.

I don't know who posted the offer you mention but one could look at it as
someone who was trying to show good faith by passing the show along and at
the same time making everyone aware of the problem with it. We then all
have a choice whether to ask for it or not. I'm guilty of not saying
anything about the particular offer but it doesn't change my efforts to
always burn shows correctly. (I think you know this about me from our
discussions of EAC vs. Roxio Easy CD Creator!) I venture to suggest that
the silence on the list similarly did not indicate that most members of the
list do not try to burn properly.

I tend to be a perfectionist myself but also realize that we will never have
a perfect world in trading. That being said, I would suggest that your
efforts have probably made a lot of us much more conscious in our trading
habits and that, if not perfect, we have a damn good quality of trading on
this list. I guess I'm saying look at the glass as almost full rather than
being frustrated because it is not quite full.

Thanks again for all your efforts.

Best as always,

Richard

You know, the SD used to be a pretty quiet place - no such thing as
"offers".

Then a few of us got this whacky idea to help pass the good stuff around
so more folks could enjoy it. Great idea, right? I used to think it was -
I've changed my mind.

In the past months, with various items (TDF, Stone Crazy, etc.) and
various people (i.e. our dear "Lulu") we've had various discussions about
quality. More importantly - a lack of quality. In any organization, it
really is up to the members of the group to police themselves - not just a
vocal few, but to the group as a whole.

So I was rather dismayed to see this post recently on the SD: " I can
offer 3 copies of the EC sunday set at the Crossroads festival. Beware:
somewehre along the line the disc is not burned DAO, so there's some gaps
between the songs."

And have quietly waited to see the reaction from this group.

What a reaction I have seen:

  Zero.
  Zip.
  De Nada.

It is apparent to me that the majority of folks on this list just plain do
not give a flying fuck about quality. That's totally within your rights.
Other lists that support other artists have been quite good at policing
their own, and this sort of thing would never go unchecked. But the EC
trading world is racked - polluted - by something worse than bootleggers.
Something worse even than hoarders. The apathetic. Those who don't give a
damn.

Okay, you all win. More to the point - Lulu wins. I give up. I recently
made a distribution offer to the group - I hereby withdraw my offer. Don't
get me wrong - the idiots among us are free to do whatever they choose.
Hell, why not copy the CD to cassette, play it back through the stereo,
record it with your PC mic, then encode to mp3, then extract and burn TAO
for the fella at the other end? If it makes you happy, more power to you.
But I see no reason why I should spend my time and money to try to share
quality recordings when the folks on this list will for the most part do
nothing to ensure that quality. In other words - you don't deserve it.

Bill Main recently passed. A shame - and a sweet guy (unlike me, I'm an
ass). I thought it would be nice to be able to pass out copies of a show he
recorded and he really wanted posted on the Geetarz site as a tribute. It
hasn't been - because out of the FOUR trades I've done for it, not one
person can seem to copy a show without screwing it up. Sorry, Bill, no
legacy here - due to stupidity. What a shame, eh? Should I go for copy #5?
Maybe 7,8,9, or #10 will be the magic number? I'm tired of being crapped on
in trades - I'll go watch some TV instead.

It is nice to see that a lot of our DVD work has been enjoyed my many
here. Want a hot tip? You've got maybe 6 months to a year before the
unwashed masses start getting DVD drives free with their PCs and manage to
screw that scene up, too - better get one NOW and trade like hell while you
still can. No more handouts from me - trades only, with those who have
spent the time, effort, and money to acquire trade material.

So rest assured, you've heard the last rant from the Almighty about
quality. I won't bitch any more, because I simply won't offer any more. You
can send your screwed up discs back and forth all you like, without any
interference from those few of us who actually give a damn. Unfair? Sure -
and you can blame every single member of this list who didn't say a single
word. Including yourself.

The SD's all yours, Lulu - have fun!

  Ciao.
