That's the norm, yeah. *Although*, I think (don't quote me) some
programs these days still read to the hard drive first, then burn.

True. However, decent software *should* stop writing with a "buffer
underrun" whenever it encounters such a situation. What that means is
you only have a burned disc up to that point, after which you have
nothing.

The error correction actually isn't the biggest problem here - the
error correction used on CDs is so robust that gaps up to 2.4mm can
be *correctly* read from surrounding data. No, I don't mean "it will
get close", but actually "the data you read off is exactly what was
put down." Compared to most "pinholes" on CDs, 2.4mm is huge. Gaps up
8.5mm can be approximated - you shouldn't be able to hear any
problems.

No, the larger problem is the way data is stored on audio CDs. As CDs
were meant to be played at 1x, and not on a computer, the audio data
is essentially one long spiral of data, without block addressing.
Poor software might re-read parts of blocks and miss others. Like
this:
Data: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Pass1: ABCDE
Pass2: DEFGH
Pass3: KLMNO
Etc...good software reads and re-reads as to overlap. Ie, to say
"I've already read DE, I'll start this next read at F." More here:

While I agree that burning errors isn't a good idea, I don't think
that was your problem. Even if your Roxio rip/burn did contain errors
compared to the original, that would have *nothing* to do with not
being able to read the new disc. Let's take my example above. After 3
passes you get the following data:
ABCDEDEFGHKLMNO
Compared to the original, yeah, that has errors. But as far as any
drives reading that are concerned, that's what the data is supposed
to look like. The resulting disc would be exactly the same as a disc
that had that data in the first place.
If a disc is having problems being read, it's a problem with the
burning step, *not* the ripping step.
