Multichannel television sound, better known as MTS (often still as BTSC, for
the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Broadcast_Television_Systems_Comm
ittee&action=edit> Broadcast Television Systems Committee that created it),
is the method of <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encoding> encoding three
additional <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_%28communications%29>
channels of <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound> audio into an
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTSC> NTSC-format
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound> audio
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_wave> carrier. It was adopted by the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Communications_Commission> FCC as the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States> U.S.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standardization> standard for
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereophonic_sound> stereo
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television> television
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_%28telecommunications%29>
transmission in <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984> 1984. It has also been
adopted by <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada> Canada,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico> Mexico,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil> Brazil,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina> Argentina,
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan> Taiwan, and others, some of which use
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL> PAL instead of NTSC.
The first channel is the stereo difference (left minus right), used to add
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereophonic> stereophonic sound to the
existing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monophonic> monophonic (the left
plus right stereo sum) audio track. The stereo information is
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DBX_%28noise_reduction%29> dbx-
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encode> encoded to increase the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal-to-noise_ratio> signal-to-noise ratio,
to aid in <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_reduction> noise reduction.
Because of the use of dbx <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companding>
companding, every TV device that uses
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_circuit> analog circuitry to decode MTS
costs somewhat more because a <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royalties>
royalty must be paid to
<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=THAT_Corporation&action=edit>
THAT Corporation, until its <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent> patent
runs out. These patents do not apply to some
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital> digital circuits, however.
The <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_audio_program> second audio
program (SAP) also is part of the standard, providing another
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language> language, a
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_description> video description service
like <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descriptive_Video_Service> DVS, or a
completely separate service like a
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campus_radio> campus radio station or
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weatheradio> weatheradio.
A third PRO (professional) channel is provided for internal use by the
station, and may handle audio or data. It is normally used with
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_news_gathering> electronic news
gathering during <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News> news
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcasting> broadcasts to talk to the remote
location (such as a <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reporter> reporter
on-location), which can then talk back through the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_pickup_unit> remote link to the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_station> TV station.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Receiver_%28radio%29> Receivers for this
channel may not be sold to the public.
