Well, this has been a real Cream week for me. Yesterday I received the book, Cream: The Lost Scottish Tour from Repertoire Books in Germany, which is a beautifully bound hardcover that I'm happy to have.
Today I received 2 Cream DVD's in the post from Amazon.co.uk, which was a surprise as I was expecting other Clapton related stuff from the Amazon.com, but I'm not complaining.
The first is called Cream: Total Rock Review. There is no new Clapton stuff (music, videos or interviews) on this set that cannot be found elsewhere on previous DVD or CD releases. It also admits upfront that the film is totally unauthorised and has not been approved by Cream, nor has it been authorised by their past or present management. [A strange statement if ever I saw one.] None of the songs or videos are complete as they are either cut short or have voice-over interviews, which is somewhat irritating, much like DJ's who fade a number and start speaking just as a guitar solo kicks in.
The content is as follows:
- EC radio interview from 8 Nov 1966 for BC Light Programme Saturday Club about Wrapping Paper.
- EC explaining woman-tone in 1968.
- Jack discussing the bass and Bach in 1968.
- Ginger on not practising from 1968.
- EC interview from 1991 - probably from among those on the DVD Cream: Strange Brew.
- Interviews with Pete Brown. One of his comments - on Robert Stigwood and I Feel Free: The manager was insisting on producing their record. But, he couldn't produce a pea out of a paper bag. So Jack, whether knowingly or not, wrote an arrangement that is sort of producer proof. [Nice.]
- Interviews with Tony Dolan - Actor/Musician [never heard of him before]
- Interviews with Chris Welsh - Music Journalist: He ranks Sunshine of Your Love in the same league as Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water. There's an obvious topic to argue about!
- Interviews with Nick Tauber - producer [never heard of him before either]
- Interviews with Steve Rosen - Music Journalist [another I've never heard of - and overall twit]: Statements like: 1.) Disraeli Gears - disappointing, except for Sunshine of Your Love; 2.) ERIC was intimidate by Jacks success as a singer and songwriter and was responsible for breaking up Cream at the height of their popularity; 3.) Layla is a pop song; 4.) After Midnight is pitiful; 5.) Goodbye was an amazing record. How many bands would call it quits with a live album. He doesn't think [that's for sure] that he can think of any; 6.) Clapton creating anything worthwhile after 1969 - he doesn't think so; 7.) Ginger bouncing drum sticks off cymbals and hitting ERIC on the back of the head. He qualifies this statement with, "These are all true tales."; 8.) Cream were so wrecked (from drugs and booze) towards the end of their time as a group, they could hardly stand on stage.
- Interview with and guitar demos by Chris George - musician (never heard of him before, as well) and Clapton fan: Here's a titbit I've never heard told before regarding the intro to White Room: Apparently Clapton took all his strings off his guitar, apart from one. He then found one of the notes from each chord and bent that string as far as it would bend to that pitch. He then recorded each different note, doing it that way on different strings - six times. So you had one for each string. So when you played it back, it sounded like....
- Interview with Jack Bruce (small piece from later years).
- Sunshine of Your Love - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
- I Feel Free - Beat Club (24 Feb 1967)
- Strange Brew - Beat Club (19 May 1967)
- Sunshine of Your Love - Jimi Hendrix Experience
- Wrapping Paper (Studio version) - with music clips from Strange Brew - Beat Club (19 May 1967)
- I Feel Free - Popside promotional film (Early Feb 1967]
- Theme from an Imaginary Western - Jack on piano in the 70's. They put this in because Pete Brown was explaining the lyrics to Wrapping Paper as a scene from an imaginary movie.
- Sitting on Top of the World - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
- Crossroads - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
- Politician - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
- White Room - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
- I'm So Glad - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
- Badge (studio version) - with Farewell Concert video footage.
- Doing the Scrapyard Thing (studio version) - with Farewell Concert video footage.
- Spoonful - Farewell Concert (26 Nov 1968)
