The timeline is correct but SRV was indeed going to go on tour as Bowie's guitar player. That is why they had the rehearsals. SRV wanted his band to open up the shows so that they could also promote their up and coming album but Bowie supposedly would not go for that. SRV quit the Bowie tour rehearsals and came back to Austin to concentrate on his club dates while the record company got ready to release his debut. He did indeed make the right choice.

Just wanted to add a little note to this topic..........
I believe the main reason SRV left Bowie was because his label was just about to release SRV & DT's first album. Without the band being available to tour so that they could promote it, there was major concern that it would flop and die right away and *POOF* there would go their big (and perhaps only) chance to gain the larger audience that they wanted.
Stevie felt that for the survival of the band, he would be better off "coming home" so that they could hit the road.
I would say he made the right choice ;)
