Hi Scott & Jon (and fellow Slowhanders),

I have been away for the last week and have just returned to a few unread
Digests.

We certainly have had our share of special material here in Oz, and most
importantly with an exclusive Australia only 45 in 1984 (yet to see an
official CD transfer).

Eric Clapton & Phil Collins doing Sam & Dave's You Don't Know Like I Know
(written by Chef from South Park)

Slight change of direction.............

Here in Australia in the late 80's early 90's there was a two year enquiry
into the high cost of CDs.

The average price at the time was somewhere between AUS $30 - $35.

After the enquiry it was found that the Australian retail CD costs were
indeed far too high, the highest in the world in fact, and it was suggested
the cost should be at the most $25.

The music industry basically said "thanks for that but we'll keep the prices
right where they are"

Jump forward a few more years when the internet started to open up the rest
of the world to us down here, and more and more people like myself said
"fuck you!!" to the local distributors and started ordering directly from CD
Universe, Amazon, CD Now etc. (I have found the average cost saving
including postage is between $5 and $10 per CD, usually taking 5 - 7 days
and delivered to my front door)

The way the local distributors try to discourage this is to add bonus
tracks/discs to local releases.

Dylan's Love And Theft (two rare early tracks)
Eric's Reptile (Losing Hand included)
Cassandra Wilson's New Moon Daughter (32-20 - absolutely fantastic version
of the Robert Johnson song)

These are three which immediately come to mind, I have many other releases
by other artists with full bonus discs with exclusive live concerts and in
the case of Bert Jansch a full exclusive best of CD which came with the new
CD release from a few years ago.

However I can remember feeling outraged when Best Buy did a similar thing
with Eric's 1999 Blues double compilation CD, issuing 5 (I think) previously
unreleased tracks. Fortunately this was quickly resolved with the help of a
fellow U.S. Slowhander burning the tracks for me.

Nonetheless it certainly is a frustrating and infuriating experience for us
all no matter where we are on this planet.

Cheers

Tone
