What Gibson did is what automobile manufacturers are doing now days,  
shutting down old factories and opening new ones without union labors  involvement, 
or going to China.  Hard not to resist the cheaper labor as  the Japanese are 
doing the same thing.   In most instances, quality  control actually improves 
because manufacturers go out and purchase the latest  and greatest tooling 
processor, which is also a write off for them, depreciated  over time on a scale.
