My two cents. Eric seemed to be a bit disengaged this time around. He did
announce that he got the message and will continue to do Crossroads. If he
does, my opinion is that he should try to find some additional new talent
and fresh new faces. The lineup of Buddy Guy, Johnny Lang and RONNIE WOOD
was awesome.
BB King went on a very long-winded meander that, again, my opinion, brought
the show to a grinding halt. This is the second time in less than six
months that we've seen BB and, bless him, he's really slowed down. And who
can blame him? He's 84 years old.
Earl Klugh was extraordinary as was ZZ Top. My biggest complaint is that
some of the top talent doesn't get enough time on stage but we all know that
going in. But they tore up the joint. As did Beck, again.
Not sure who Citizen Cope is (read: I'm an old dude and not up with current
music) but he didn't strike me as fitting the bill in a guitar festival.
Adding Bonamassa was a good move but it's too bad he didn't a chance to show
his chops on the main stage. We wandered over to see him on the Earnie Ball
stage to see his 30 minute acoustic set which was phenomenal.
I didn't realize that Hubert Sumlin was ailing but he came out attached to
oxygen but still played strong. He's a classy guy.
Vince Gill did a nice version of Lay Down Sally and was his usual
entertaining self.
This time around there was plenty of food and water, even if it was $5 a
bottle. We've grown used to the exorbitant prices but the venue actually
had piping hot water coming out of the faucets in the bathrooms which
effectively kept people from filling their empties. I'm sure someone from
Toyota Park would explain that's just the way it is set up...
All in all, it was a fine show and there was a lot of great music. It'll be
interesting to see if Eric waits another three years to organize another
one.
Cheers,
Jeff
