Macca's tall tale may be an account of several events he conflated to make a more entertaining story.  Hjort's 'Strange Brew' mentions several times where Hendrix, members of Cream and the Beatles, and other musicians attended each others concerts.  On May 7, 1967 at the Saville:

"...struggling with an unwilling guitar, [Hendrix] quips:  "If Eric Clapton's in the audience, can he come up here and tune this thing?"

Cream had their own gig that evening.  Nothing is mentioned about EC or Beatles in the audience.
