[Slowhand] smoke pot?

Recovering alcoholics or addicts who are working a real program of recovery
do not smoke pot, use recreational drugs of any kind, or take prescription
drugs other than as prescribed by their doctor.
An alcoholic's idea of quality substance abuse is to put on a fresh pot of
coffee.
Smoking pot is not a "harmless escape" for an alcoholic or addict - it is
the first step out the door to relapsing (it actually is considered a
relapse even though it's not alcohol); as a matter of fact, it is quite
deadly, as in people who smoke a little pot will eventually (and sooner
rather than later) go back to their drug of choice, whether it's alcohol or
something else. I have friends who have done just that. That, very often,
can lead to death.
A person who works a really strong program can be around people drinking or
smoking pot or snorting coke or whatever. They won't do it often but they
can be around it and not give in to the temptation if they have a good
reason to be there.
I have a friend in London whose home group is a meeting that Eric
attends occasionally and he has heard Eric tell his story. His impression is
that Eric works a very strong program.
As one person in recovery, I would be appreciative if you didn't spread
statements like the one you just did. It is totally incorrect and, in this
day of the internet, such statements spread like a virus. There is so much
ignorance about the diseases of alcoholism and addiction, and bigotry and
prejudice against alcoholics and addicts, that even a statement like that
(which I have no doubt you intended as and viewed as innocuous) only adds to
the difficulties that alcoholics and addicts face in dealing with so-called
"normal" people and the public at large.

Do recovering alcoholics smoke pot? I think that they do - a somewhat
harmless
"escape", though, it doesn't help with will power does it? I don't know...
