John sayeth:
Bob,

You are absolutely correct about using caution with modular homes.
However,
as I stated in my previous comments, the type of modular home you are
speaking of sounds like the type I raised concerns about - ones that
look
like to oversized trailers with an open side, then connected at the
site.
They are always raised, typically like a mobile home.

However, the type of modular home mentioned by Wendy and the other
reader is
the real deal. They are often built onto a concrete slab and each
section
of the structure arrives at the site to be lowered into place, often
having
two stories. These are the real "modular" homes. The other type you
are
likely referring to are the ones that were once called "mobile" homes
but
manufacturers in that industried lobbied to get the terminology changed
to
"modular pre-fab".

John:
Those Discovery Homes-modular homes looked pretty d*amned good. In
addition, their parent company (I guess), Palm Harbor Homes had testimonials
on their website about how they "mobile homes" survived Hurricane Charley
last year. If the things can survive 135 mph winds that sounds pretty good
to me. However, when you encounter the situation we did in St. Bernard with
flood that may be a different situation unless you have it elevated. And
that's something we may all have to face.
