[StBernard] Justice Unserved

Westley, I think the shrinks, psychologists, etc. thought it would be better
to try to release these folks **if they could be medicated and controlled**.
I believe they thought these folks could function in society on their meds.

The problem is, how do you ensure they stay on the meds? If they have a
family care-giver then perhaps that schedule can be maintained. If they
don't and are on their own, it's taking a chance.

If you've watched any of the Law and Order shows you've seen what happens
when psychotics or schizoid types go off the meds. (I'm not a shrink or
psych nurse or anything but tend to believe there's truth in what these
shows portray).

If these mentally ill folks don't have a care-giver, have a history of going
off the meds, etc. then they need to be kept in a controlled environment.

Laurie,

Being mentally ill is quite different from being mad.

Maybe my history is a little fuzzy, but wasn't it liberals that said
we
should close the mental institutions and let those the mentally ill
out to
mingle with the rest of society? Who cares if they were a danger to
themselves or others, they had rights, after all.

Did the family agree with this decision because they think it is the
right
thing or because they did not want to go through the emotions of a
capital
murder trial?

I'm just very skeptical of social workers and psychologists. Until
we can
truly read minds on the level of a "Vulcan mind meld", I don't
think we can
ever know what someone else is truly thinking. So I am also very
skeptical
of the insanity plea.
