PLEASE SUPPORT SHINING THE LIGHT ON PROPERTY TAX INCREASES
Last night, a Senate committee approved HB 83, authored by myself and
several others, which improves the public notice requirements related to
proposed increases in millage rates without voter approval by shining the
light on property tax increases. The bill has already passed the House and
only needs to pass the Senate to be on its way to the Governor's desk.
The bill is an important tool in our fight against property tax increases.
Citizens have a right to know:
. When they are taxed
. How much they will be taxed
. What their tax money will be used for.
Current law does not require that any of this crucial information be
provided despite that fact that a taxing body can raise millions of dollars
and impose hundreds of dollars in property tax increases on individual
citizens at a single meeting.
Millage rate rollups are already taxation without representation . Taxpayers
should at least know how much they are being taxed and express their opinion
.
HB 83 also provides for Internet postings of millage rate meetings, since
many people are now using the Internet to obtain information (the Internet
has been in commercial use for 15 years), it should be utilized in providing
important information to the public.
HB 83 also closes a glaring loophole in the public notice requirement,
created by Attorney General Opinion 08-0257 which allows taxing bodies to
reschedule millage increases to a later date without additional notice. In
other words, a taxing body can now reschedule a millage increase vote and
only have to post a 24 hour notice on their door.
This loophole is simply an insult to taxpayers and needs to be closed. HB 83
requires that adequate notice of the new meeting be posted on the Internet.
HB 83 is important to our fight against property tax increases. Please
contact your Senator to vote FOR HB 83 (225-342-2040), which could be on the
Senate Floor as early as this Sunday.
.
A list of the Senators and their emails appears below. Please consider
sending your Senator an email asking them to support HB 83, which shines the
light on property tax increases. A short email from you would really help
which:
. Asks your Senator to vote FOR HB 83
. To shine the light on property tax increases by improving the
public notice on millage rate rollups and
. Close a glaring loophole in public notice requirements created by
an AG opinion
. Also list your name and address
Legislators generally respond best to constituent emails from their own
constituents who write short notes of support in their own words.
