Supreme Court accepts resignation of St. Bernard judge

NEW ORLEANS - The Louisiana Supreme Court accepted the resignation of St.
Bernard Parish Judge Wayne Cresap and permanently banned him practicing law.

"Wayne G. Cresap shall be permanently prohibited from practicing law in
Louisiana or in any other jurisdiction in which he is admitted to the
practice of law; shall be permanently prohibited from seeking readmission to
the practice of law in this state or in any other jurisdiction in which he
is admitted; and shall be permanently prohibited from seeking admission to
the practice of law in any jurisdiction," said the press release from the
court.

On Oct. 1, 2009, Cresap pleaded guilty wire fraud.

Prosecutors said Cresap took approximately $80,000 in illegal payments over
a five-year period beginning in December 2004.

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said the scheme involved "cash kickbacks" to Cresap
from attorneys to allow inmates out of jail without having to put up cash or
property bonds.
