I don't struggle with it -- I ignore it :-)
The phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" wasn't coined to
help someone justify buying Photoshop -- it's just often true. Look
at Edward Tufte's work. Or think about a text table of longitudes,
latitudes, and altitudes -- and then think about that turned into
a topographical map. Which conveys more meaning?
Part of the problem, I think, is that the original concept of the
Web was document-centric, and HTML continues that orientation. But
a Web "page" today can be a single "document", multiple documents
(a page with sidebars and ads, a portal), an application front end,
or the digital equivalent of a retail store's display case, or, or,
or ...
Designing for *user experience*, rather than "document" delivery,
clearly requires more emphasis on visual design. And that's why I'm
here :-)

My name's Hassan, I live in San Jose, CA, and most of my Web work
has been in "enterprise" type applications, which I'm now starting
to get away from by doing more visual, art-oriented sites.
Ancient History: <http://webtuitive.com/hassan/about/>
Skills: All my development work for the last few years has been done
using Java/JSP/XML/MySQL (and the odd bit of Perl, of course!). Most
of my consulting work has involved rapid prototyping using the above
technologies, with an emphasis on IA/UX.
Over the last year I've been getting more proficient with Photoshop,
as well as experimenting with Illustrator and Flash/ActionScript. Oh,
and developing my digital photography skills to capture items going
into one of the sites I'm developing. Always something to learn!
