Recently on the CHI-WEB mailing list, William Hudson ran a survey to
determine whether usability specialists tend to have a left or right brain
emphasis, or have systemizing versus empathizing brains, as he characterized
them. The results of the survey were different for men and women and showed
that most women tend have a right-brain emphasis, while for most men, the
hemispheres are balanced. I took the test, which showed that, for me, the
two hemispheres are balanced, though I am a woman.

I think this balance is an important quality to have in Web design--or any
type of software design for that matter. I agree with Kath's statement about
the abilities of people at the extremes on the "rb/lb scale" probably being
limited to a single specialty. People who have the disposition and talent
can do it all. However, I think the innate talent argument applies equally
to programmers and designers. :-)
