[Webpro] tableless design

Hello webpros,
The css questions lately, as well as a conversation I had the
other day, got me thinking about tableless design. I was on Eric
Meyer's css list for a while about a year ago and learned a lot of
things quickly from it. BUT... A lot of the people on that list are
pre-occupied with tableless design in an almost unhealthy way. They
almost had me convinced. I was writing dhtml to create 3 column layouts
with all of the columns the same height and all of this... but the
conclusion I eventually came to was that css just isn't there yet. I
was working on a website that just would not come together cross-browser
and I finally decided "screw it, I'll just use one base table." And
everything was fine. The page came together perfectly.
I've found that combining tables and css really works extremely
well. It helps eliminate nested tables, blank gifs, bgcolor="", FONT
TAGS, BRs all over the place... But the idea of 100% tableless just
seemed like it was an extension of the egos of the designers.
I don't mean to rant; I'm curious what the consensus of this
list is.
Opinions? Anyone?
