[Webpro] alternative to paypal

I have a client who wants to sell coffee over the web.  I suggested 
paypal, but he doesn't like the idea of people leaving his site during the 
buying process.  He is concerned that is doesn't look professional.  I see 
his point, but I don't think he understands the value of paypal handing 
the credit card transaction verses having to do that on his own site.  He 
has a limited budget.  So, does anyone here have any experience with any 
open source credit card handling software that I could load on his site?

Is it necessary to have https to do this properly?  The site has been set 
up on a shared host account so we would have to move it to get ssl.  I 
have not experience with this.
