I don't think we quite want grids. What we want is something we haven't
been given yet, but we're trying to talk in terms of what we already
have, and it's not working. What we really want is something that we
probably won't get until CSS4, if we're lucky. We want a combination of
absolute positioning, so we can put any element anywhere on the screen,
and floats, so one element will get out of the way of another, and
tables, so the whole thing will stretch and shrink without jumping or
overlapping. We want a way to tie one element to the bottom of another,
or to tell two elements to always be the same height, but still keep
them independent.
We want a perfect system, but we don't have one. What we have is three
or four imperfect systems, and until that changes, everything we do is
going to be a hack.
