This is Bill's wife, I'd like to get my 2 cents in before he comes home
from his best friends wedding picture-time.
He may give the list his definition of relief carving, but his first
experiences with carving is why I call it "relief".
When he was a novice carver he struggled with designs, laminations,
cupping, finishing techniques and all other aspects of carving where
mistakes could happen. There were many times that a carving was "pulled
off" by some miracle and when the hangers went on the back and it was
placed on the wall, my Bill would release this huge sign of "relief",
in amazement giving thanks that it had worked.
For his first few carvings I actually believed that is why it was
called "relief". To this day I know that this aspect is still part of
some 'Unofficial" definition.
Many thanks to all of you, for all the years you have been such an
interesting part of my (our) lives,
Debbie J
