[Woodcarver] What is relief carving?

Hi Carvers,
 
I had thought we might hear from someone like Big Dog who is so involved with Congress and judged competitions which must have some guide lines for  classes of competition, i.e. Deep relief, shallow relief, bas relief, etc.  I also thought it had to do with casting shadows or something.  Being a person who likes to carve projections from a plane surface with lots and lots of undercutting I was very interested in where this topic was going.  Keep the comments coming...reading with great interest.
