[Woodcarver] What is relief carving?

I am probably not the best one to answer this question as every thing I cave i let out a sigh of relief when it is done.
 
Releif Carving---------------  Draw the pattern on the wood. Cut out around the pattern. Do no cut out the pattern itself. It may be done in layers. What you are doing in releif carving is cutting out the wood around the object you wish to stand out and not the object itself.
