[Woodcarver] New Carver Advice

Steve,

You certainly picked the right place to ask this question, and you will
probably get 20 different answers. Here is my 1 1/2 cents worth:

1. Ashley Iles has a reputation of having a softer quality steel which is
harder to keep sharp.
2. Palm tools are great for hand held carving, but striking a full size tool
or a "Euro-sized" tool with a mallet offers a far, far greater level of
control and accuracy.
3. Two Cherries make fine quality tools, but they a quite expensive.
4. I have owned several different brands, and for my money, Stubai tools
offer the very best quality tool for a fair price. Visit
http://www.stubaidirect.com and take a look at the releif carving set. You
get eight tools that will last your life, and probably a couple of
genertions after, a tool roll, and a mallet for $259.95. Best deal on the
market for the new carver.

Finally, the level of service at Stubaidirect can not be exceeded by anyone.

Good Luck & Good Carving,
Daniel Heine

hearing from everyone out there. I do have a question.

invest in a basic set of quality carving tools. My preference will be
relief carving on a smaller scale so I am looking for palm handle tools for
the moment. I am leaning towards either a Two Cherries basic set or an
Ashley Iles basic set. Whew........here's my question.

I have read and heard that Two Cherries has a steeper angled grind than
Ashley Iles and I don't know if it makes a diffence.
