Sam:

About tips breaking on Swiss tools:
I can't count the number of time this has happened in my carving
studio, with both my tools and the students. It happens when the tools
are new and are being used "out of the box", with factory sharpened
edges.

The reason for this is that the factory edges are "concave" instead of
"convex" in shaped. That is, the backside edge of the tool is hollow
ground at the factory, using large grinding and buffing tools.

I warn my students to be careful with their tools till they are
re-honed on a bench stone. After that the tools are far less likely to
break.

Check it out, OK?
