I own several including the new 2 1/2 designed by Chris Pye and I have not 
found them to be any softer than any of my other tools, and I have at least 5 
different brands such as Pfeil, Stubai, Ashely Iles, two cherries, etc.
Even if they were, I don't know that I would find that any big disadvantage 
for myself as an amateur carver. Perhaps a professional carver working all day 
long in hard woods, etc. may find such a weakness, but I have not in my 
avocational carving.
