HI All,
Good way to get to know each other a little – I am new to the list.
I am self taught – lately using books from the wide variety of authors now
available. I started carving at about 10 years old – I don’t know why, just
did and liked it. Those times were quite different – I carried a pocket
knife everywhere I went! At 11 or 12 years old I bought a carving knife
while at Boy Scout camp. It was more like a utility knife (you unscrewed
the handle to access a right and left bent blade in addition to the straight
blade. I cut myself several times the first week with that one. I carved
neckerchief slides and canoes and figures. I had a stint of power carving in
the 1970s using a magazine featuring Spike Boyd. I like the hand tools now.
I retired in mid 2002 and have been able to give more time to carving than
in the past. My wife and I have noticed significant improvement in my
carvings since using some of the books I recently purchased. I like the
step-by-step books – it is almost like watching a pro do the carving. Now
that I have the time I am planning on joining a local carving club and
looking around for some classes.
