1. My first instruction, about 11 years ago, was a weekend seminar on
carving Santas with Rick Butz. That wonderful weekend was a turning point
for me since most of the people I met there had taken lessons of one sort
or another, and I realized that there was a lot to learn. I was getting to
a point where I wanted to carve more than Santas , but I didn't know how to
go beyond where I was. I really wanted to take more lessons. Not long
after that at an art/craft fair in Camden, Maine, I was drawn to the booth
of an amazing wood, stone and metal sculptor. After talking with him a
while, I asked if he taught carving, and with some hesitation he said,
"Yes, but only if you are serious about carving". I had the carving bug
really bad and knew that I was serious about it. David Holmes is an
incredible talent, and in the 5 all-day private lessons that I took with
him, I can't even begin to tell you how much I learned...and how much more
convinced I was that I had found my niche in carving.

2. I started with books, the first being Tangerman's "Whittling and
Woodcarving"....a good one to start with. I did a few carvings, then kind
of dropped it for a few years. It was a few years after our move from New
York to Maine that I decided to pick up carving Santas, and got a few
books...Ron Ransom and Tom Wolf....and in the early 90's went to the
Adirondacks for the seminar with Rick Butz. I've taken a few other
seminars and will continue to do so...there's so much to learn!

3. I guess I'm another one who started at around age
40.......young....very young! :)
