>1. Who taught you to carve, if you were taught by someone else?
10 years ago I saw an article in Wood magazine about carving a carousel
horse by Jerry Reinhardt and thought I can do that. Didn't know anything
about basswood or carving knives so used a piece of 2 x 4 and a utility
knife, it turned out OK and I still have it.

>2. How many of you are "self taught" (which could include using
>books,etc.)?
I then looked in the library for inspiration and learned about wood and
tools etc. We visited a carving show in Saginaw that year and learned a
whole lot more and met with folks who belonged to the Michigan Wood Carvers
Association and also saw someone from our town that I didn't know carved who
had a table there. From there we made some phone calls, met other people,
went to other shows. The rest is history. We started our own club, Chief
Osceola Carvers in Evart MI. From that we started the Wood Carvers Roundup
so others could learn.

>3. How many of you started carving "late in life" (use your own
>discretion)?
Next year I will be able to collect my social security! So that makes me
starting later in life.
