Garrett,

I couldn't have done better myself!!!! Great job!!!!

Now ... take the time to first use an eraser to remove any carbon and
tracing lines before these carvings accidentally get stored away.
Second, be sure to sign your name and date the work. Use a #2 pencil and
sign it on the right bottom side near the carving or on the back. One
day you will enjoy knowing exactly when you started wood carving. I
realize that you are only thirteen but one day your son or grandson will
be thirteen and discover "Dad's" first go at wood carving and perhaps
think that maybe they would like to give it a try. And third, grab your
Dad by the shirt collar and ask for some nice pre-routed basswood,
butternut, or sugar pine blanks! The potential you are showing is worthy
of quality wood.

As many of us artists do you have started on a few pieces that were
probably lying around the carving studio, not the very best but well
good enough to try your hand. That's a great way to start, just to see
if you enjoy the craft ... but there will come a time when it creates a
BIG problem for you. With the potential you are showing I fear this
time will be extremely soon. You will be working on a board that is not
quite quality and suddenly realize that the carving you are doing is the
very best that you have ever done. Now, what to do ... do you quit
because the board is not worth the quality work, do you start over after
already having worked for hours, or do you finish and just be a little
disappointed that the work so outshines the wood? Every carver and every
craftsmen that I know has a few of these types of pieces hidden
somewhere in their studio :)

I had an art teacher pound this into my head many years ago ... Since
you never know if the next piece will be your "Master Piece" you should
always act as if it might by using quality supplies.

Great Job!!!!

Hi all,
My 13 year old son tried his hand at carving, so I put his work on my
web site because he wants your opinion on his work. He seems to think
you all know more than me,,,,,,,, wonder why????
Anyhow, its titled Garretts Page on my web site at
www.partnersinwood.com

Thanks all and take care.
Clive.
