Butch.
I have to use a cane & was not happy with the commercial ones so I started
making my own.
http://www.treelineusa.com has some tips/ferrules.
I bought some, used one, and the rest are collecting dust somewhere. These
tips look nice, but don't have much gripping power on concrete/tile
surfaces. Some of these tips are threaded & you can convert from one type
tip to another. When I want to go somewhere I don't want to be looking for
the right cane-tip (the Grandkids probably hid it somewhere anyway) I make
my canes to be used, not just looked at. ACE Hardware has an assortment of
rubber tips (don't get plastic). These come in Black, Bronze, and White &
with diameters from half-inch up to 1 & 1/4 inch.
For Winter use, I get 'spike ferrules' from http://www.hikeamerica.com/ .
These are the tips that
you'd usually find on 'ice axes'. I have canes for 'dress-up', others for
'what-ever', and the spike ferrules work real nice in the Winter for a walk
to the mailbox.
If you make a cane, with a fancy metal tip, for 'collecting' specify this on
your receipt. If it's not specified & if it breaks and/or the tip slips on a
hard surface... you may be liable & you know how our society likes to sue.
I don't make/sell canes for a living. I operate by word-of-mouth. My canes
are 'pricey' as they sell from $80, up to $125. If I get a comment about the
price, I just tell them that they can get a real nice aluminum one at
WalMart for less than $20.
