paul and diana,
the way you have described the timber, makes me think of another timber, which grows close to the water and sometimes people confuse it with casuarina, but from the description and colouring, it seems to be it could be a type of eucalyptus that grows close to the river, which i have carved, very dense very beautiful grain, very red with browns/blacks ... which common name is red river gum...
i will check it out in the book and see if it is a eucalyptus or casuarina... most of this have pine needles for leaves and are often called something oak.... i have also carved some sheaoaks, flameoaks, etc. they vary some can be quite carveable, sometimes rather difficult to work with, but all are rather dense and interesting timbers. the casaurinas can be a bit toxic when sanding but carving with hand or power tools would not cause too much problem, just a lot of hard work.

i will do a bit more research on this and get back to you. perhaps a picture of what your base looked like would help to identify the wood.
cheers
maricha

I am not sure which of the eucalyptus woods I want. Acutally, I had seen it only once before and it went under the name fishtail oak. I saw some recently in Omaha, NE (while visiting my son). I was told that it is sells under the name fishtail oak. It was 6x6x2 and I used it as a base for a carving. I called back when I arrived home and bought the last piece they had in stock. Then I got the idea for a carving using the look of this wood; but, have no idea how to go about finding it. I would need a piece 6x6x12 do do the carving. It is a redish brown color and has an interesting figure (more interesting than birds eye maple). It, or at least the piece I bought, is fairly dense. Have any of you in Australia carved it?
