hi glenda and friends,
very interesting all these websites.
i have check in the book entiled.... WOOD IN AUSTRALIA , types, properties and uses, by Keith R. Bootle, and there is definitely such timber.... and i quote

Oak, Silky, Fishtail ... Proper name Neorites Kevediana L. S. Sm.

A hardwood of the north Queensland rainforests. Heartwood brown. Sapwood distinctively paler. Typical silky oak ray figure. Medium and even testure. Straight grain. Add about 970 kg/m3, Heartwood sufficiently durable for external use not in ground contact. Susceptibility of sapwood uncertain. used in joinery flooring. limited to districts of occurrence.

from the picture that paul sent me, and i hope you do not mind my sharing this information, it is very similar to woods of the same family that i have sculpted. i have not carved this particular one, but being a rainforest timber, would be very similar to the flame silky oak which i am doing now and which i am enjoying very much without too much hard work. the straight grain is easy to work with, but the scale effect cell is slightly softer and one needs to be more careful.

the reason it is not so well know here in sydney is because it is limited to districts of where they grow and because it is a rainforest tree.

according to the this book it is a NEORITES KEVEDIANA L.S. Sm which is again worthwile looking into.

nevertheless for the purpose of sculpture and or carving project from my experience you would find it carvable, not as hard as ironbark or stone, but with the proper sharp tools and know how i am sure you would enjoy it.
cheers
maricha
