We have gone thru discussions in the past regarding copyright and legality of
copying material. Just because it is out of print does not change the
copyright, many books are very small runs and are out of print/unavailable
within months of their publishing date.
Copyright is a 75 year protection for the author/artist. It is renewable after
that time as well if I recall correctly but I leave that for a copyright lawyer
to deny/confirm.
Using patterns published in books/mags for your own use is usually allowed.
Look at the current patterns offered in the carving magaines, it gives you
specific allowed uses and this book may offer the same kind of permission in the
book itself.
If you plan to use the patterns at part of a kit for sale or use in a workshop,
it is likely that you would not be allowed to use it. Your best bet is to check
with the publisher about the specific allowed uses before you do much with it.
All that being said, there are a number of used book search groups on the
internet that can locate out of print books and get them to you for a reasonable
price. I use http://www.ABEBooks.com for finding out of print books that I
want.
Good luck, Vic H
