I think you are talking about "Tohickon" - a fish eye used extensively in the taxidermy trade and as good as any I've see. You can have a look at them at:

Peter,
Wow, this is why this List is such a treasure to all
of us. Now I can try both the super glue that Vic
suggested and the epoxy that works best for you. As
for creating the timber eyes, I will try some samples,
but this may be beyond my capability as of now. Are
the eyes in your swamp tortoise made this way? They
look great! Please give me a few more lines about how
you carve out space for the pupil and set it in so
perfectly as you've done on your site.
In the meantime, if I use purchased fisheyes, does
anyone have suggestions as to which ones to buy for a
15" steelhead trout? Somewhere I heard that the best
ones are made by a firm whose name begins with the
letter "T"--Tol-something, I think. (I've never carved
a fish before, can you tell?
Thanks, guys, for always being there.
Jean

Jean,
I would use a five minute epoxy rather than super glue
. The super glue
will soak in and stain the timber but the epoxy wont.
The epoxy is also gap filling so will tolerate a
little in accuracy.
If I was doing it for myself I would prefer to inlay
the eyes in
timber. It
is more work but the effect is great and you get the
satisfaction of
doing
it all out of timber.
Use a timber with fine grain but prominant medullary
rays for the
iris(it
is the end grain that is exposed when finished) and a
dark timber for
the
pupil.
You need to carve the eye complete before you start to
inlay so that
you
get the correct shape etc.
When it is finished polish with micro mesh( the girls
use this to
polish
their nails) or finish with a high gloss clear laquer.
Again I use a
nail
polish because there is no added colour.
