Mike Asked:
I have seen refernce to linseed oil and sieanna for dipping or painting base coats on carvings. Does this have to be boiled or do you just mix the sieanna with the linseed oil.

Hi Mike.. l.o. and a tint can be used for base coats, true.. is even good to base coat, despite what some say.. for follow up with acrylic washes. However, it can be used as a coat over a painted item to soften the 'harshness' of acrylics.. it softens the look.
Boiled l.o. will cure, if you will.. while raw l.o. will, essentially, "never" cure. To my understanding, the l.o. is not really boiled.. rather, there is something added to it that causes it to cure in a relatively short time.
If I'm incorrect in anything here.. I'm sure I'll be corrected.
