hi merrillee,
sorry that i was not clear in the process of applying the oil. perhaps this
will help a bit.
what i normally do is apply the tung oil, then use the dremel with a small
brush bit, and let it go right into the cells of the timber (only use an
electric fun as the smell of tung oil is offensive). i wiped off the excess
with one of the cottontipped drill bits for the dremel and after a few days
when it is not sticky , i put another coat of the tung oil, doing the same
thing, first the brishtel brush then the cotton or felt tipped bit and
removed the excess oil. did these process several times, till i was
satisfied of the patina growing from the inside cells to the outer
perimeters of the wood. then let it dry in a natural way, just left
standing in the studio, and when it was dry, not stickly waxed and polished
several times. usually at this stage, i wax once a week for a month, then
once a month for a year.... and that's it .... but i use very little wax.
i find this specially good for honduras, brazilian mahogany and some other
dark timbers. am sure it will work for you too.
cheers
maricha
